Rising Phoenix Charitable Foundation has chosen "Fire and Ice" as its theme for Saturday night's gala. With a new name for our charitable foundation comes a new hotel venue! We are thrilled with our new location, the MGM Grand! We can't get any more "Vegas" than being right on the world famous Strip!** The group room rates are as follows: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wed (June 2nd - 5th) is 119.00** per night Thursday (June 6th) is $75.00** per night Friday and Saturday (June 7th & 8th) is $145.00** per night Sunday (June 9th) is $75.00** per night **Please note that the rates above-listed do NOT include the daily "resort fee" of $25.00, plus taxes. The $25 daily resort fee was non-negotiable; $25 per day should be added into any budgets for accommodation. It is common for hotels on the Strip to incur the daily resort fee. In our situation, the fee will provide: Complimentary high speed internet Daily USA Today newspaper available at Front Page newsstand Unlimited local and toll free calls Limited Business Center services such as outgoing faxes, copies (up to 5 pages), notary, and boarding pass printing Free access to the cardio room As "luck" would have it, in 2013, our customary 2nd weekend in June is already slated to be a big convention weekend and room rates are already rising. Experienced attendees know that it is common for our "group rate" to be the same as the hotel's "posted rate" this time of year and six months in advance. However, as the hotel fills, it will increase its fee. As we get closer to the event, you'll appreciate this competitive price! We realize that our registration period is a lot shorter than it has been in past years. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we had to negotiate a new hotel contract. We have reserved a limited number of rooms based on convention history. In order to ensure these low rates, your room(s) must be booked by March 15, 2013, using group code: _____________ The code will be provided by February 20, 2013. However, knowing a preliminary count of attendees and the amount of nights that you will stay and how many to a room will ensure that we can book as many rooms as possible at the above rates. Please post in this thread or include this information when submitting your payment via paypal. We are thrilled that the fabulous Aaron Hendra Project will be performing for us again in 2013! If you missed AHP in 2012, make sure you come this year! Aaron Hendra and Gigi Gonaway are definitely a MUST SEE and HEAR! 4. It is with great pleasure that we announce some big changes to GALS Charitable Foundation GCF has changed its name to Rising Phoenix Charitable Foundation™. With this name change comes many more exciting developments that will, undoubtedly, produce more funding for our Foundation, which in turn, benefits our given charities. Our "core" will always be GALS -- that is not changing! Thanks to GCF's extremely generous core base, our ability to help "Envision. Encourage. Empower." has increased each year since our founding in 2007. As we have grown in stature, reputation and viability, we have found ourselves being asked to help others outside of the "Gerry connection." We feel that "Rising Phoenix" more accurately describes and depicts our lofty goals as we endeavor to provide substantial aid to The Shade Tree, Angels of East Africa and other entities that cause women, children and their pets to "rise from the ashes" of dire situations! In addition to enabling us to enhance our fundraising opportunities and expand our donor base, this change will also include the sale of Rising Phoenix™ merchandise which sports our new logo! This new line of merchandise will be just one of several new tools we will use to market "Phoenix" in a way that will generate funds that will ultimately help others in need. As you may be able to tell, we are VERY EXCITED and VERY MOTIVATED to take our fledgling charity to the next level and all because of YOUR SUPPORT! These changes are the result of many months of meetings, collaboration, professional business planning and powerful prayer. We hope you all will embrace as fully as we have. Much love, ~ D
  5. Hi Tammy ~ When I spoke with Marlene, she said they have plenty of school supplies, that it's shoes that they need desperately. Thanks for your very generous spirit! ~ D
  6. A Visa Gift Card would be fabulous! But a Gift Card to Walmart, Target, or other "all purpose" super stores would be great as well. Thanks so much! ~ D
  7. Hey all. The Shade Tree is in desperate need of gift cards to buy their children shoes for school. Due to gang activity, schools only allow a particular color of sneakers to be worn by the kids, so a gift card is the best way to go. Please send to: The Shade Tree Shelter PO Box 669 Las Vegas, NV 89125 Make sure you let the shelter know you're from GALS! Thanks much! ~ D See note in Post #5
  8. On behalf of GALS Charitable Foundation (GCF), we are pleased to announce the following amounts raised for Angels of East Africa (AEOA) and The Shade Tree Shelter (TST) at the 7th Annual Gerard Butler Fan Convention. Our Friday night event, as well as AEOA specifically donated auction items, raised a total of $12,510 for Angels of East Africa. Our Saturday night event, as well as TST specifically donated auction items, raised a total of $10,215 for The Shade Tree Shelter. Total for both events and GALS' amazing Virtual Con is $22,725 raised for charity! A heartfelt to all of those who donated items for these events and to those who generously bid on those items. Much love, ~ D
  9. The best of Gerard Butler...so far 1/22/2012 Jackie Morrison of thecelebritycafe.com What's next from the Highlander? One still wonders what the film world would have been like if a young Scottish lawyer had not decided to give up a legal career in favor of pursuing his acting dreams in London. Once upon a time there was a handsome hunky highlander in Glasgow who had been the president of the law society at his University. He graduated with an honors degree in law and had been the lead singer of a local band that performed in pubs around town. He was academically gifted and a career in the legal profession was a match for his intellect but it appears that his artistic yearnings were much stronger. A twist of fate happened when he was not able to complete his traineeship at a prominent law firm in Scotland. The legal door closed and Hollywood beckoned. If you are a fan of this man, you know who I am talking about. His name is Gerard Butler. Since becoming an actor, this former lawyer has brought some interesting movies to the large screen. The following is the best of Gerard Butler so far. One More Kiss In 1999, the 28-year-old Butler appeared in this Scottish film about a man named Sam who runs a local restaurant in Scotland with his wife, Charlotte. Sam gets the surprise of his life when his childhood sweetheart, Sara, returns to him after seven years in New York. While Sara had been away, she developed a life-threatening illness and it is her dying wish to spend what time she has left on earth with her one and only Sam. Butler brought a sensitivity and emotional portrayal that is not sappy but makes you question what you would do if you were Sam. His Scottish accent is still very strong here and he is unrecognizable. Cradle of Life Butler paired with Angelina Jolie to play a former Royal Marine turned mercenary in this sequel to Lara Croft. Butler's character is named Terry Sheridan and he must help Croft recover Pandora's Box in Africa. This film was the one that showed how much Butler can physically alter his appearance. Filmed about four years after One More Kiss, this is a Butler who has no resemblance to Sam. His long black curly hair is now a buzz cut and his bodybuilding for the role was obvious. Dear Frankie We only know him as the stranger in this tale of a Scottish single mother who creates a deception so her young son does not know the truth about his real father. A young boy named Frankie writes regularly to his father who he believes is away at sea. In reality, his dad is a violent man who caused Frankie's deafness. Butler is introduced in the film when Lizzie, Frankie's mom, must produce a fake father to convince Frankie that his dad is a seaman. Phantom of the Opera Butler had to get singing lessons for this role but his days as a local rock star in Glasgow came in handy. The classic tale was retold with Butler playing Erik, the Phantom. Included are lots of singing and mystery, but it won him many new fans. Many people had been used to Michael Crawford as the Phantom, so Butler took a risk stepping into the shoes of a stage legend. 300 This 2006 film was Butler's breakthrough role as the King of Sparta, Leonidas. Special effects were courtesy of CGI and Butler became even more muscular than he was in real life. His abs of steel made him an international movie star when this movie was released. Men noticed him as much as women and wanted to get the King Leonidas workout. P.S. I Love You Butler was the romantic comedy lead in this 2007 film about a young widow who must learn to live without her husband. Butler went from Scottish accent to Irish to play Gerry Kennedy, a fun-loving singer who is married to Hilary Swank. Gerry dies before his wife's 30th birthday and writes a series of letters to her with instructions on how to enjoy life in his absence. This film is a major tearjerker, so, if you are a fan of Butler, it is very hard to watch without getting very upset. The Ugly Truth This was a movie based on the essential differences of men and women in dating. Butler is a shock jock TV host named Mike Chadway, who must deal with his conservative and romantic producer, Abbie. Mike makes a deal with Abbie that he can help her win over the affections of her handsome neighbor, Colin, who happens to be a doctor. If Colin falls for Abbie, then Mike will quit. As Mike coaches Abbie to bring a man under her spell, he actually begins to fall for her himself. So far, it appears that the Scottish lawyer who left the Highlands for London to find success in a world of creativity has accomplished his dreams. It is hard to imagine anyone but Butler in any of the films he has been in. In the past year, Butler added the duties of executive producer to his resume with Machine Gun Preacher. His first film of 2012 is Coriolanus. Butler's career has had a prolific track record to date. His latest films showcase his serious side in playing intense characters in provocative plots. Somehow it all seems like destiny. They say that if you are meant to be on a path, once you agree to take the road and journey towards it, all doors will open for you. In his case, it appears that the scales of justice could not contain the creative energies of Gerard Butler. It's a good thing because what would those films have been had it not been for him?
  10. I certainly understand and echo your frustrations, but as Holly has so eloquently stated: "In my opinion, it's not our job to "understand" what's going on. The bottom line is that Gerry's fanbase has been contacted and GALS has attempted to liaise between the sister sites for this purpose. Second, the whole "promote and comment project" has been an effort to "assist" those trying to point out this very argument." The YouTube version we were promoting wasn't pulled because of anything to do with MGP, but apparently other studios that complained to YouTube about copyright infringement. Did my heart drop to my stomach when I saw the message posted at YouTube? OF COURSE! Bad timing? Heck yay! But this had nothing to do with those associated with MGP and I'm sure TPTB are just as upset about what happened as we are. But what can we do? We have to make lemonade out of lemons. All we can do is our part to see that this film gets distribution and much better marketing, but we have to remember, we don't know everything that's going on behind the scenes. I personally don't understand how Beverly Hills Chihuahua can get better distribution and marketing than MGP, but other than continue with our grass roots campaign and let our voices be heard, I don't know what to do. Whether you feel we're being duped or that our efforts are wasted, I beg of you to give this another 24-36 hours for Team Gerry! We appreciate each and every one of you who have been so diligent in this campaign! Dayna
  11. We are aware that the video has been pulled and we are in the process of alerting the "powers that be" and trying to ascertain what to do next. We will keep you informed. Thanks for all your hard work and efforts for this stirring film! GO TEAM GERRY! Dayna
  12. In celebration of Gerry's latest film, Machine Gun Preacher, which is being released in theaters on September 23, 2011, GALS is giving away some great prizes! What do you have to do to be entered for a chance to win one of the great prizes below? Just tweet the following: Machine Gun Preacher with Gerard Butler, the story of Sam Childers, in theaters now! #gbgals #machinegunpreacher #samchilders Winners will be chosen at random on October 2, 2011 at 12:01 AM MT. Open to US residents only. Prizes: Machine Gun Preacher Film Poster Sam Childers memoir, Another Man's War: The True Story of One Man's Battle to Save Children in the Sudan Machine Gun Preacher: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, featuring lead track "The Keeper" written & performed by Chris Cornell In this inspirational true story, Machine Gun Preacher is about Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and finds an unexpected calling as the savior of hundreds of kidnapped and orphaned children. Gerard Butler (300) delivers a searing performance as Childers, the impassioned founder of the Angels of East Africa rescue organization in Golden Globe-nominated director Marc Forster's (Monster's Ball, Finding Neverland) moving story of violence and redemption. When ex-biker-gang member Sam Childers (Butler) makes the life-changing decision to go to East Africa to help repair homes destroyed by civil war, he is outraged by the unspeakable horrors faced by the region's vulnerable populace, especially the children. Ignoring the warnings of more experienced aide workers, Sam breaks ground for an orphanage where it's most needed-in the middle of territory controlled by the brutal Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a renegade militia that forces youngsters to become soldiers before they even reach their teens. But for Sam, it is not enough to shelter the LRA's intended victims. Determined to save as many as possible, he leads armed missions deep into enemy territory to retrieve kidnapped children, restoring peace to their lives-and eventually his own. The explosive, real-life tale of a man who has rescued over a thousand orphans from starvation, disease and enslavement. Machine Gun Preacher was released September 23rd, 2011 and stars Gerard Butler, Michelle Monaghan, Kathy Baker, Michael Shannon, Ryan Campos, Joshua Drew, Madeline Carroll, Souleymane Sy Savane. The film is directed by Marc Forster. Promotional thanks to Relativity Media and Official movie website: Machine Gun Preacher More about Sam Childers and AOEA here.
  13. Ten years ago today, was a beautiful Tuesday morning. I was in my bathroom getting ready for work, periodically looking up in the mirror to see the television in my bedroom, where I was tuned in to Good Morning America. It was a day like any other for most, but for me, it was an extra special day. I walked into my office to iron my clothes for the day and my beautiful 17-year old daughter walked upstairs from her bedroom. I hugged her and said, "Happy Birthday, my sweet baby girl." I was filled with so much love for my first-born who had grown into such a lovely, gracious young lady. Never could I have imagined in my worst nightmares what would happen next. Leaving my daughter to get ready for school, I walked back into my room to dress for work. It was at that moment I watched in horror as a jetliner collided into one of the Twin Towers. I knew immediately this was no accident. I was frozen with fear and shock listening to the commentators as yet another jetliner slammed into the second tower. I must have made some sort of exclamation as my oldest came running into my bedroom. I could tell she couldn't quite comprehend the enormity of what had just occurred, but really, could any of us? This July, I visited the as-yet-to-be-completed memorial site. As we walked closer and closer, the crowd became noticeably quieter and there was a reverence, which was palpable. We stood in line briefly for tickets to the museum, but I couldn't bring myself to enter. It was still all too fresh. I was overcome with tremendous grief for those souls lost, appreciation for those who served so valiantly, and pride for my beloved country. So much has changed these past 10 years. My first-born is 27 today and the mother of an adorable baby girl who is the apple of this grandma's eye. Today as we honor the victims and heroes of 9/11, let us also look forward with faith, hope and above all, love. We will never forget... Dayna

  16. I received the following e-mail and thought I'd share: My name is Joel and I run a podcast called Yeah, It's That Bad, we watch movies that are supposedly bad, and we reevaluate them to see if they really are as bad as people say. We recently reviewed Law Abiding Citizen. We poked a little fun at the movie, but in the end we came to the conclusion that Gerard Butler did a great job in the film. We believe this is something that your readers would enjoy listening to. You can listen to it here: http://www.yeahitsthatbad.com/2011/04/episode-13-law-abiding-citizen.html There is some bad language, but nothing too harsh. The Podcast is HILARIOUS and they do make several valid points. If you're easily offended by a little bad language or a little criticism, please don't listen. Otherwise...Enjoy! ~ D
  17. Kathy, I don't know, I have taken a look at the posts that were cloaked and none of them were yours. I honestly don't know what happened to your post. Are you SURE you clicked on "save changes"? I went back three pages and couldn't find anything from you. ~ D When I am wrong I admit it. I just checked again and I posted under, "Love Never Dies" not here. I got confused because I had never posted on that thread before and then I saw this thread and I thought it was the same one since the people posting were the same people that posted on the other. I deeply apologize for confusing you and causing you the work of checking. I just couldn't believe that what I wrote would be taken off. It wasn't, I was mistaken. I'm sorry! ~HUGS~ Kathy LOL! I'm so glad to know I'm not the only one who does that sort of thing! No problem whatsoever. Have a good night! ~ Dayna

  19. Hello Lair Dwellers ~ Some posts from today were set to invisible due to a couple of things. First off, while I haven't dwelt in the Lair before, I don't believe it is a Role-Playing thread (Swannie, please correct me if I'm wrong). There was "Role-Playing" mixed with "Real Life" discussions going on and it was hard to tell whether one was "in character" vs. "real life." Tempers were beginning to flare and people began to take words personally. Due to the above factors, we, the Mod Squad, decided it was best to cloak the "offending" posts and go from there.May I suggest, if any of you would like to continue with Role-Playing, please feel free to create a new thread for this, making it clear to those who wish to play that this is ROLE PLAYING and the usual guidelines apply. For those who take exception to this type of role-playing or the vernacular used in this potential new thread, please spare yourself the discomfort and find other places to participate, contribute to and enjoy the camraderie of GALS. Again, please, please, PLEASE remember The Golden Rule and RESPECT one another. Thank you, ~ D

  23. So we are less than six months away from Vegas 2011! Numbers are down this year and we'd like to try and understand a little better what's going on "out there" and how (if possible) we can make it easier for more to attend. Please be honest (not snarky ) with us! We want to know! ~ D
  24. UPDATE: To those who are waiting for their auction items, I was told today that the items will go out via FedEx overnight tomorrow. So be watching for them and then check in here and let us know all about it! ~ D
