Sturla Gunnarsson takes over helm of Canadian director's guild

Last Updated: Monday, April 28, 2008 | 5:38 PM ET

Award-winning Canadian filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson has been elected president of the Directors Guild of Canada for 2008-09. The Toronto-based director and producer was elected at the union's annual general meeting in Calgary over the weekend.

Born in Iceland and raised in Vancouver, Gunnarsson has amassed both critical acclaim and a set of trophies including an international Emmy in 1997 for the documentary Gerrie & Louise as well as several Gemini Awards for the TV series DaVinci's Inquest and Intelligence.

His film credits include Such A Long Journey, Rare Birds and most recently, Beowolf & Grendel — a cinematic retelling of an ancient poem starring Sarah Polley and Gerard Butler.

Gunnarsson's feature documentary Air India 182 — which reconstructs how the deadly attack took place — was the opening Canadian film at the recent Hot Docs Festival in Toronto.

Gunnarsson takes over for outgoing national executive board president Alan Goluboff.

The guild also elected a new board:

  • 1st vice-president: George Mihalka.
  • 2nd vice-president: Mark Reid.
  • Secretary/treasurer: Grace Gilroy.
  • Alberta chair: Darin Wilson.
  • Atlantic region chair: Craig Cameron.
  • British Columbia chair: Nick Kendall.
  • Manitoba chair: Charles Crossin.
  • Ontario Chair: Don McCutcheon.
  • Quebec chair: Rodney Gibbons.
  • Saskatchewan chair: Susan Schrader.
The Directors Guild of Canada is a national labour organization representing more than 3,800 workers in the film and television industry.
