Darabont to direct $40m crime thriller for The Film Department

Jeremy Kay in Cannes 16 May 2008 07:16

Frank Darabont will direct the thriller Law Abiding Citizen starring Gerard Butler for The Film Department, which is selling international rights here.

Production is set to begin on August 18 in Detroit on the low-$40m range story of a criminal mastermind who controls a city from the confines of his prison cell. Butler will play the prosecutor who stands in his way.

Darabont would appear to be well suited for the project given his taste for prison dramas like The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

Kurt Wimmer wrote the screenplay and Lucas Foster (Mr & Mrs Smith) is producing with Alan Siegel and Butler.

The Film Department's international sales chief Steve Bickel is also talking up Bart Freundlich's romantic comedy The Rebound with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha, adventure The Peak 3D and Second World War thriller Brothers In Arms.

Filming begins in August. Oh he's just jumping from one film to the next. I hope he finds some time in between to just take a well needed break. So, he's heading to Detroit eh? Too bad my brother just moved back home to STL or I would be up there visiting him during that time. Baby in tow of course. I wonder if he has any unfinished business to deal w/that he needs to go back for like 3 mons. Hum... :p

So, they have moved it from 8/11 to 8/18. Good, that gives him another week between shoots.

Where is he anyway? Is he at Cannes? Haven't seen any new pics lately. I'm in withdrawal.

Detroit isn't too far away! I may have to make a trip in August! I can't believe the schedule Gerry keeps. He is just finishing Ugly Truth & starting LAC in August. WOW! I too hope that he gives himself a little time to rest!

We're ALL in withdrawals!!!!! I bet he is in Cannes - good for him. I hope he's getting some rest.

I am excited about this film! I said somewhere else that I really think this is going to be a great vehicle for Gerry to do something different. I'm so happy for him. IMHO, he needs something a bit more serious . . .

Good choice, G!

:wuv: Thanks Becozy,

I was wondering what next bout of self torture Gerry was going to involve himself in!!! LOL, LOL, LOL!!!

Only kidding. But the man is more than awesome. "Make hay while the sunshines" seems to be the schedule for the G-Man right now. Thank the good Lord that Gerry is making movies. He is so deserving of this, he has worked so hard and now it's paying off. I'm going to go broke buying his films!! But what a way to go!!! Every occasion that comes up, I ask for Gerry movies or money for next year's convention. Nothing else. I'ts working! Got PSILY for Mom's Day and 'stoopid' me, I already have the deleted scenes on that! DUH!! I think school is ruining me for my movies. I usually know that the extras are on there! And have watched them.

You Go Gerry. I am so proud of You as we all are!~

Your Lil' Ocean Gal, Joanna

We're ALL in withdrawals!! I can't agree more. :wuv:

I too am very excited about this new role as a prosecutor. Of course, he does well in whatever he choses to do, but this one sounds like he can draw from some of his law exposure. I love all the new films coming out but hope he takes time for relaxing between shoots. Marlene

Oh happy day, he's coming to my part of the world!! While I don't live in Detroit, it is a hop, skip and a jump away from me. I wonder where he will be staying, I doubt it would be actually in Detroit...

I am soooo excited!

OMG Detroit!!!! Only 2 hours away. Guess where I am going to make some trips to in August. I lived there for 13 years and still have friends back there. Can you say "Road trips". Now I will just have to find out what hotel he will be staying at. I know all of the good eating places so maybe with some luck I will be able to see him. LOL. I will be on a mission.

Katherine,

I live about an hour away from Detroit. Let's find out where he'll be staying (probably Birmingham? Lots of famous types stay there) and go camp out!!

Birmingham might be a good place but it could be Troy, or there is the new hotel downtown at the casino which is supposed to be very nice.

I am going to be on the hunt with you as well.

It could be downtown Rochester @ the Royal Park Hotel too. Wonder if they will need extras for the movie? How would we find out??

Ack, ladies, there are too many choices of places where he could be! You're right, Troy, Rochester...who knows?! Come August, we'll have to split up and communicate via IM and phone...teehee! I actually wrote it down in my calendar for August, too funny. :)

If GB actually makes it to the Detroit Area in August to film LAC.

There will be plenty of things to do if he has any time off.

It might be possible to run into him at The Partridge Creek, or another shopping mall, or

at a Tiger ball game. Wonder if he would be interested in the Grand Prix?

I think that would be more fun.

But thats just me. I'd just rather take my chance that it could happen,

than try to track him down.

I can't seem to see any comments anywhere on the spelling errors in those posters put in misc gallery for LAC. They have him starring as Gerald Butler and under Producer Gerald Bulter. Shame on Film Department for not getting something as important as their leading man's name correct. If this has been posted anywhere else can someone point me to the thread. The name is not spelt incorrect on the main poster but the information page. :tantrum:

I bet Gerry will not be happy at this.

The meerscats image was too funny!! Thanks for sending. But of course - kidding all the way. Stalking is scary and everyone knows that, I would imagine. But it's still neat when a celebrity comes to the broken-down city of Detroit. And I can say that, having lived and worked there for 7 years! Detroit needs good press, good actors and filmmakers filming there, and more dollars pumped into the economy. I hope the whole LAC crew spends lots of money and has a good time in Detroit Rock City!!
