7/11 - Bob Thompson: RocknRolla's Gerard Butler’s got Game too

Recommended Posts

Fans of Gerard Butler -- and I know you’re out there -- appreciate the fact that the affable Glaswegian can go either way.

Butler can do sweet and charming as illustrated by P. S. I Love You and Nim’s Island. And he can also kick butt with the best of them as his Spartan king underscored in his break-out movie 300.

Looks like the 38-year-old returns to the action front for his next few films. In Guy Ritchie’s gangster picture RocknRolla -- set to premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival -- he plays One-Two, a gritty street-savvy crook involved in a real-estate scam.

In the futuristic thriller Game, out this fall, he’s cast as Kable, the top-ranked warrior running for his life in a video blood sport called Slayers.

OK. So after his huge hit 300, producers must be opening up the treasure chest to sign up the actor. Maybe and maybe not.

“You know what, the money is better, but not in every job,” Butler says. “The first couple I did after 300 I was still taking less money than I did on Phantom of the Opera because I wanted to do them.”

For instance? “Guy Ritchie,” says the actor. “I wasn’t going to have them pay me a lot of money on RocknRolla. The thing is I’m still going by what’s interesting and if you want to stay doing interesting jobs you can’t always get a payday.”

In the end, he’s thrilled with RocknRolla, and predicts the crime thriller will return Ritchie to his lofty Snatch status.

Game was more of the same must-do kind of movie, although much more demanding on Butler. “I probably had to run through 200 explosions in that one,” he says of the shoot in New Mexico earlier this year.

One particular sequence still resonates with him. “I’m wearing like a skimpy combat shirt, but it’s rolled up to here,” recalls Butler. “And the fact is that there’s a whole building exploding behind me and just before we go, they say ‘Everybody, make sure all your skin is covered. And stay at least a hundred feet from the explosion.’

Shaking his head, Butler adds with a smirk, “I’m twenty feet maybe.”

He survived that and many more special effects like it. And all things considered, he can’t wait for audiences to see Game results. “It’s different than anything I’ve ever seen,” he says.

Meanwhile, Butler grins and bears the fame and the recognition that makes him more public than he ever intended to be.

“I do get recognized and the problem is that when I am recognized the reaction is often very strong just because of the kind of movie that 300 was or even sometimes Phantom,” he says.

Phantom? Really?

“Phantom’s a movie that you either loved or hated,” reports Butler. “But if you loved it, you really do, and I’ve seen some very, very strong and passionate reactions.”

Stef, thank you so much for that! I love reading interviews with Gerry.

Strong reaction? YA THINK? I'm getting it tattooed on my body for LIFE!

This is why I love the man:

“You know what, the money is better, but not in every job,” Butler says. “The first couple I did after 300 I was still taking less money than I did on Phantom of the Opera because I wanted to do them.”

and

“I wasn’t going to have them pay me a lot of money on RocknRolla. The thing is I’m still going by what’s interesting and if you want to stay doing interesting jobs you can’t always get a payday.”

What a man, huh? He's so not affected by Hollywood. Money isn't an issue for him. I love that. It's so sexy that he's so confident in HIMSELF. He's his own man, and no amount of pressure from Hollywood has changed that. He's the genuine article, right thar.

That's one strong and passionate reaction that has continued reacting since 12/31/04 for me (and a lot of others too). Phantom? Oh you better believe it, Bob!!!!!!

This article is so right in many ways. Gerry can be either sweet and charming or he can be a tough guy, and he can make both types of role believeable. I am amazed at how much Gerry can stretch himself, and I like the fact that he doesn't stick to just one kind of movie (even though I really really really would love to see him do another musical). I also like the fact that money isn't everything to Gerry. Just because you have lots of money doesn't mean you're going to be happy, and I'm glad that Gerry is doing stuff that he's interested in. If he did things only for the money and had no interest in them, he probably wouldn't do as good as an acting job (and I believe like many of you do as well that he is one of the best actors of this time). I hope RocknRolla and Game both do well, and you have to admire Gerry putting his body on the line for many of his scenes in Game. I appreciate and respect an actor who does as many of his own stunts as possible. Just be as careful as possible though, Gerry, none of us want to see you get seriously hurt. Don't be a reckless man, lol. As for Phantom, it's my favorite Gerry movie that I have seen so far, and it will be hard for Gerry to do a better acting job in another movie as he did in Phantom. (I haven't seen some of his movies yet, such as Dear Frankie which I really want to see, but I believe Phantom will be my favorite Gerry movie for a long time, and it will always have a place in my heart because he is so intense and so passionate in it, and it is the movie that made me get drawn to Gerry in the first place). So yes, Gerry, Phantom gives me a "very, very strong and passionate reaction."

P.S. Stay down to earth, Gerry. Don't ever let Hollywood change you for the worse.

P.S. I love you (I couldn't resist writing that, lol).
