Growing up in Paisley was perfect practice for Hollywood's hard-man, who tells Chris Prince that he and his Doctor 'Buddy' couldn't cure Scotland's ills Held up as a paragon of male physical fitness following his breakthrough role as the musclebound King Leonidas in 300, Gerard Butler dismisses any suggestion his physique was CGI enhanced, although his finely toned bulk has diminished since completing the film.

"The thing is, I'm an actor, I have to play many different roles," he says. "If I walked around with that physique I would look a bit ridiculous in every other role I played since then." When The Big Issue meets him, Big Gerry is bone tired after a gruelling day spent promoting Guy Ritchie's latest slab of cockney carnage RocknRolla.

The Glasgow-born actor plays One Two, a clueless crim who falls foul of old school London gangster Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson) following a dodgy land deal.

"I think there are a lot of similarities between the inner depths of Glasgow and cockney London," he says. "Definitely, there's a lot of the same characters, they just have different accents."

One Two also goes head to head with Russian mobsters and philosophy-spouting crack heads, although, having grown up in Paisley, Butler is no stranger to the less seemly side of life. "I'm not going to exaggerate and say that that is how I spent my life, but I grew up in quite a working class area so you can't avoid coming across that every now and again," says Butler, who graduated from Glasgow University with a law degree before committing to acting.

"Funnily enough, when I started studying law, in some ways I became even more involved, because then you start going out to the clubs in Glasgow where there is a real mixture of middle class and crazy people. So in my time I've known a few gangsters but it's never been a big part of my life.

"But the experience of growing up in Glasgow, I think, endows anybody with a lot of personality for better or worse. There's a lot of Glasgow in me and there's a lot of Glasgow in One Two." Despite his sex symbol status and reported romantic dalliances with Cameron Diaz and Naomi Campbell, Butler is amused by the suggestion Scotland, with its manifest health and social problems, could benefit from more successful, physically fit men like himself or fellow Paisley "Buddy" David Tennant. "I think everywhere needs more men like me," he laughs. "That's the one thing that I'll be quoted for! But no, I don't think that myself and David Tennant would be the answer to Scotland's problems.

"It has pretty dodgy areas but it also has some really nice areas. I don't think that by cloning myself it's going to increase the life expectancy, if anything it'll just lower it!"

Chatting ahead of RocknRolla's premiere about a comically quick tryst he enjoys with co-star Thandie Newton in the film, he chortles: "The sex scene is hilarious. It's kind of like sex with me." But the taxing nature of the promo merry-go-round is starting to show, even on a fella with such a famously robust physique.

"I'm really excited about the premiere but right now, if someone gave me the choice, premiere or sleep, I'd do sleep."

Thank you Barb. The Big Issue article is quite a find as it's not a magazine which is generally available in the shops.

It's sold on the street and supports those who need assistance with employment, housing, etc.

Oh Gerry, but the thought of cloning you....it might not help Glasgow but what about the rest of the female population of the world!! :drool1::pant:

I am sure the cloning lab where they did Dolly the sheep is in or near Edinburgh. When I bid on Hugh Jackman's t shirt that he wore in Boy From Oz I always joked that it has his DNA on it and when I want kids I will take it to Dolly's lab. MM I just wonder if the top I wore when I got my pic taken with Gerry and he put his arm around me left any of his DNA on it - I'm putting in my order now ladies ha ha. :funnyup:

I surely hope he's resting now. Getting lots of sleep . . . I look forward to seeing him on the 6th, but boy I hope he has had a chance to rest up and catch up on his sleep.

it's too bad that magazine is not available here but it reports mainly what Gerry has said before.

If you haven't seen the Men's Health issue with Gerry on the cover, you'er missing a great interview!

Big issue is a magazine usually sold by homeless people who come from Shelters :)

TBH unless i saw gerry on the front cover its not a magazine i would tend to buy as it doens't have any that interests me :)

I would love a gerry clone, although i admit his accent would need to be a bit like it was a few years ago when he first came into acting.

He is losing his accent slightly but its there none the less :)

Dop you have to grow a clone from scratch, like with Dolly? Would we have to wait another 38+ years to get the Gerry of today? To late!! Oh well, the future generation of ladies could surely benefit. How about 200 million of them for the future? That would about give us enough to make a difference for the good on this planet. To bad, most of us won't be around to enjoy them.

Thank you for the post! In our country, there is a project inspired by "Big Issue" to support socially disadvantaged people, I buy it from time to time to help them (actually, it is usually quite interesting, because, unlike most magazines, they are really independent). But this was in another country....

As to the article - it looks like he really had so many interviews in connection with London RnR premiere, that we even cannot imagine how tired he was (no wonder the author of the "Tormented Torso" wrote what she did). It is a pity - I have always thought that for him, the premiere is a reward after working so hard, but it looks like he was not able to enjoy it properly this time (I hope that normally he does). I believe that he found enough time to relax at least after that - after all, it is more than two weeks we have not heard about him....

As to the cloning, I do not support the idea so much, he cannot be substituted by anybody!!!!!!!!! :wave::wave::wave:

As i said its not a mag that ever really interests me but my dad buys it in Glasgow occasionally.

Gerry is unique! No cloning! The downside of making movies is promoting them. He has been on a whirlwind schedule promoting Rock n Rolla & PSILY. He should take time for sleep. Isn't Gerry starting production of Law Abiding Citizen soon?

I agree with no cloning of Gerry. It is his uniqueness that makes him so endearing and special.

I've noticed in the past that his schedule when promoting a film is very grueling. Prior to "300" he was running nearly 24/7 for a few weeks and I couldn't imagine keeping up with that and not feeling like sleeping for weeks when it was over. I'm just glad he's been under the radar for the past couple of weeks - hopefully that means he is getting rested in preparation for next week's new onslaught of publicity as it opens in L.A. and NY.

Awesome read and dadgum I started writing Archie cockney, but I wasn't sure where the cockney accent stemmed from. Plus Anna didn't write Brock with a cockney accent. This means nothing to people who don't read the role play, but anyway thanks for the read. The story was based in London tis my point.

Gerry you are a great guy period in my book. I don't think you are perfect and I don't care.

You for darn sure throw yourself in every role I have seen you in and I enjoy the heck out of your work.

P.S. It is kinda rough being a man round these parts too. People are awful intolerant if you don't fit in the good ol' boy category. Women do not have it easy either, but just where do women have it easy?

I agree about the accent. I've noticed it getting weaker as the clips I've been watching are newer. funny thing though. My husband likes to tease me by talking with a Scottish accent, and you know what? I've found myself saying certain words with that same accent; like "yew" instead of "you", "keds" not "kids", and so on. If Gerry's losing the accent, I think I'm gaining it. sorry GALS, I'll try and stop!! :bonk:
