Susan~Sporran
They do have mayors, but they call them by a different title, Lord Provost, and there have been women in that position before. A funny story from the Glasgow City Chambers - there are portraits in the gallery there of all the Lord Provosts since the 19th century. There is a portrait of the first female Lord Provost (the title remains Lord even when a woman holds the position) and for some reason her legs don't seem to match up to the rest of her appearance. (click for a look-see) It seems that the artist decided to use his wife's lovely legs for the portrait rather than those of the Lord Provost. That's a story they tell when you tour the City Chambers (something I highly advise doing if ever you visit Glasgow).
