I recently purchased Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married. Watched both DVD's the same night I received them. It's a very good series mainly about a small group of women in their 20's and various young men and activities. It's very well done. Gerry is so young and baby faced it tears at your heart strings. He does act the role of a louse. ( Found it interesting since my sister had dated off and on a man like that in her 20's. He knew how to handle many women as does Gerry's character) I'm so glad I have that as part of my GB library. Only have about 4 more to go. Anyway it was a good purchase. I do have a DVR that plays all regions. It only cost about $65. It's paid for itself since I like to order from the UK.

Which episode did you see?

I highly recommend the series. I feel like I watch it through at least once a month. You can buy the Australian DVD online and either watch it on your computer (most DVD drives on computers allow you to change the region a certain number of times) or buy a cheap region-free DVD player. I just picked one up for $30, shipping included.

They showed Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married on a Swedish channel recently. I followed it. I only missed two episodes. I found Gus creepy from the start. I knew he was lying and saying things for his own winning.

Yeah, Gus definitely used people to his own ends a lot, but... how do I say this... I'm not sure that he wanted to. He obviously had some addictions that he wasn't dealing with that caused problems for him, and it seemed like he was just trying to find his way through the best he knew how. There were definitely times when I thought he felt remorse for what he was doing, like the guilty way he looked when he was relaying the story about the "burglars."

One scene that I think is particularly telling (and really amazing acting on Gerry's part) is the scene when Lucy finally gets fed up and tells Gus off for good. You can see the pain on Gus's face as she keeps going on... he knows that everything that she's saying is true, and it's almost like it hits him just then that he's a horrible human being. Yet, he still tries to B.S. his way out of it, and chases after her as she walks away...

I think that for Gus, women are a way for him to feel validated. Deep down he knows he has all of these problems, but it's almost as if he thinks that if he can get a woman to be devoted to him, then he can't be all bad. I think that's why he comes back to Lucy after being kicked to the curb by Megan, instead of going out and just finding some other poor girl to take advantage of. I think that's also why he goes after her after she tells him off... if he can just get her to forgive him, it'd be like metaphorically forgiving himself.

I haven't seen it yet but i'm dying to ! Only found out he stared in it like a few weeks ago (It was in the 90's and i am 17!!!) And i've only found the aussie DVD on ebay but dont know how to convert it to work on a UK dvd player!! Though Marian Keyes is one of my favourite authors and i've read and re-read the book many many times!

In the book it explains that Gus came from a violent drunken family and that he himself is an alcoholic, as you discover Lucy's father is also an alcoholic and she begins to understand that's why she's attracted to them kind of men because she belives she can 'fix' them.

I don't think Gus is evil but with any addicition you do become greedy and selfish, putting that habit above anything else. I mean look at real life? Some People lose Their partners/homes/jobs/kids before of their addictions. I just don't think he knew any better, he's been brought up like that. But i also don't think he loved lucy, i think he may have cared about her deep down but not as much as the drink (Or Gambling in the film ?) which is why you sometimes saw him feeling guility. She was just a free ride!

I do love Gus though when he's being all funny and cute and irish, i think Gerry will have been especially great in those parts!

Yes rather than say Gus is evil or good, more like he is damaged but Lucy can't fix him, Gus has to fix himself.

I did not know that about Gus from the book - see then it all makes sense because of the environment he was raised in and his own issues with alcohol, Gus self sabotages relationships because subconsiously he doesn't think he is worthy of true love, whether he does it when someone gets too close or he is afraid if someone got too close they would see the real him and that terrifies him or he just sabotages his relationships subconsciously, he is used to being hurt and disappointed in terms of his family, which can fundamentally shape your view of all future relationships, and better off being the one who hurts first. All the cockiness often hides self loathing. You have to be able to love yourself truly before you can truly love someone else, unconditionally.

I recently read LSIGM the book, and enjoyed it very much. It's quite different from the series in places, but still lots of fun. Gus is even more sympathetic in the book, because he's not a smarmy a-hole like Gerry plays him, just more of an extremely unreliable leach. ...but flighty and damn cute.
