I meant if a man has to carry something in something...I prefer a briefcase! I just don't get after years of men carrying their worldly goods (Back you gutter snipes) in their pants pockets and wallets how come they all of a sudden have to carry a purse well I mean "manbag" around! Swansong
because back then, all most men carried around was a wallet, keys, lighter and cigs. Now we are all high tech; with cell phones, Ipods...etc, and that stuff can be cumbersome, and if you lose those high tech toys, you're out a lot of money. Most professionals have their laptops, and in Gerry's case, he may have scripts, contracts and other business paraphernalia along with his "toys." Plus, he's known for being disorganized, so the bag keeps everything in one place. Seriously, the only think different about that bag and a brief case or attache is the shoulder strap. ladyfran
Yeah I guess your right Swannie.....I'm just old fashioned I guess.... I would like to do a survey now as to just how many men DO carry bags??!! Wait...that doesn't sound right! I mean manbags! Frannie

Kidding of course- varied opinions are the spice of life. Yeah, I don't notice a lot of men carrying around man-bags in my everyday life... then again, much of my everyday life is spent on a college campus, so they just carry backpacks. But elsewhere in New Orleans... it's a rare occurrence. BUT, with the stifling heat here, you don't want anything else hanging on you if you don't need it. Lady Ski Bum
Perhaps we shouldn't call it a man-bag but call it a shoulder pack... no for GB it is definitely a MAN-pack. No that just doesn't sound right it has to be MAN-bag. We wouldn't want to carry on discussions about his MAN-pack...... Now I debated about whether to put the yellow towel pic here and I will probably be sent to the Over-18 but it did flash into my mind when I was writing this... Rubee815
I have to report here in the Greater San Francisco Bay area (SF-Oakland-Berkeley) man bags are fairly common. It might have a lot to do with the fact public transportation is used quite a bit. On BART, the local transit system I see them all the time and they seem to contain laptops, various business documents and a book or two. Backpacks are still in use here as well even by guys long past college age. So Gerry would fit right in!
Skatingfan03
I think that Gerard´s manly-looking shoulderbag looks very practical for a man of today to carry. It reminds me of the big light-brown shoulderbag, in which my father used to carry his camera-equipment as we were travelling. Xan
I doubt anyone would "challenge" GB's masculinity because he is carrying a man-bag or a purse, for that matter. As Dr. Phil says. he would open up a big ol' can of Leonidas' whup-a** on em.

ladyfran
I believe it's demographics....The West coast is used to seeing men carrying "man" bags and I do believe some in NY but not quite as popular as on the west coast! I'm from the Hamptons in NY and I have to say it doesn't seem to be a big thing there either...{which I'm totally surprised about} because that's an area one would expect to see this fashion statement! But now that I live in North Carolina....well let me just put it this way ........YOU WILL NOT see that happening here!! I'm going to do my own private survey on this issue and I will get back to you on the subject! I really don't know how this became the topic here anyway, I expressed my opinion on not liking Men carrying these so called Men bags and all Hell broke loose!! It's Just one little country girls opinion Ladies!! It is what it is!! I really thought I redeemed myself when I said as long as he's carrying a Burns script in it! Frannie Could do what Canadian men do, carry it all in stinky hockey bag or gym bag - I think the man purse is an improvement - you might see them on a university or college campus around here - it is always amazing the various ways people find to carry their books. Now GerBear looks like an avid reader, looks like the type that always has a book on the go if not having scripts to read, probably has a little black book the size of the Oxford Dictionary so what is the man to do? Besides Scottish men are used to wearing a purse like object with their kilt - the sporran -

mommaduck
Hi--I just now caught up with this thread and will add my 2 cents worth. In the past most men carried a briefcase containing papers, desk work and the like. Now many men who fit into that catagory do carry "man bag" or shoulder bags rather than a very large case. Carrying an oversize case is hard on the hands and the weight is better carried on the body. It lalso allows one's hands to be free to carry a cup of Starbuck's or whatever. I also think it has to do with safety and preventing someone from grabbing the case out of your hand and running. With the shoulder bag, it certainly makes it a bit more difficult (not that it will stop all muggings) and the bag will hold all of the necessary items in the business world of today. Some men use backpacks, mostly students, and around here, bicyclists and so forth. Shoulder bags are replacing the backpacks even among the younger students--and actually I think they are more practical, and here again, a little easier to "protect" a side bag than a backpack from someone reaching in and grabbing something. Anyway, that is my take on the issue. And this thread has been another interesting and rather "fun" conversation. Hugs, Judy
GBPhanatic
Judy, I agree with what you say and I have to tell you that I can't stop staring at your siggy! That's the face of heaven on Earth! Delene
AbandonThought
Sure, the messenger bag style is more practical if you're carrying a few things, but they're so not a practical alternative to a backpack if you're carrying a lot of weight. As someone who routinely carries 20+ pounds of fooking law books, I can say that I would not enjoy having all that weight on one side instead of equally distributed (shouldering the weight, if you will ) I think it's hilarious that this thread has completely left Gerry behind. Usually it's the opposite. A thread about your favorite flowers? That reminds me of Gerry! Steph
cybrsal
I used a side bag full of books. When it got heavy, I distributed it accordingly, by having the strap over my head and lay across the chest to the other shoulder. I like man bags. They make sense to me. It beats a backpack draped on half way. 2 cents isn't worth much, but there you go. Sally

GBPhanatic
Most of the Docs I knew, particularly the younger ones, carried cross body bags all the time. The older ones tended to carry the briefcase. Delene
