Don't you ladies forget the first person to see in person I want a PM about it in vivid detail as soon as you are rested from your trip and whatever emotions one might deal with from seeing such a performance. Believe me this ghetto fabulous redneck has learned to be a huge fan of all things Phantom/Erik.
I don't care the pairing, happy ending, sad ending, I want all the books and I wish I could see something like this and the original play in person, but that is not possible so please share, share share.
:hugs: to fellow Phantom :phantom: phans :rose:

I certainly can do that for you Tracey, but you have to see this on stage, there are no words to describe the delight I feel when I sit in the auditorium listening to the music,

and soon I shall be able to enlighten you about the intricaties on stage too!

But be warned Meg is no sweet ballerina anymore................ :faint:

hugs,

I agree with Anna. They've changed the libretto from what i hear from the website. I still want to see it. Now, I'm positive with my friend, Steph from work and i are going to New York to see it, possibly in March or April, haven't decided. Whenever i can snatch two tickets- that's when. My new favorite character- Gustave, Christine's son. He's so cute....

:yummy:I hope that he looks like the Phantom? After all; he is another Genius like his dad...I can't wait to see what he looks like...Alas; the only way I will get to see that is through those who actually get to go and see it "first hand".....sigh

It's O.K., Anna. I will always love Meg, Christine, Raoul, Madame and especially Erik no matter what they do. It is kind of like the unconditional love one has for a child. I just see Jen Ellison shining in the role if they make the movie with the Gerry movie cast.

I am sure this new cast is great as well, but I suppose I shall always be partial to the Gerry movie cast as it finally brought this story alive to me.

Love ya,

Tracy

I think i would try to steal the role of Christine, since I have been working hard on my soprano voice lately. I would love to see Emmy and Gerry come back for the fun of it. Who would be Gustave? Just a thought. :)

I very recently saw LND in London and loved it. I didn't see the original effort, only this remamped one and I suggest that everyone should go and see it. It's very different to Phantom I in the sense that it is not so glamorous and with so many people on stage. It has to do more with the characters and what is going on inside them. The music is powerful and the actors will give you chills. Especially the number "The Beauty Underneath" will consume you, it's a rock song and breathtaking. I would die to see and hear Gerry perform that.

For us Gerry fans who have watched the interviews of the makers of POTO the film and heard Webber's idea of Eric, a lot of things in LND fall in place and make sense. Clearly Webber believes that Eric is more a rock singer than an opera tenor and he conveys this in all its glory in The Beauty Underneath. Clearly he wanted someone to act the role of Eric, not sing it, to convey all the feelings and pain and sensuality and thus is makes all the sense in the world why he would choose someone like Gerry in the film and you can see a lot of this in the other characters of LND. It's a real shame that all those critics and even fans of the original theatrical play did not respect the creator's vision and choice and chose to have a very conservative approach to the film and Gerry's portayal of Eric which must have been at the time much different to what people were used to by the theatrical version (right now the theatrical interpretation of Eric is much closer to the film version).

Back to LND, if you have watched the film and the interviews of G and the makers, a lot more things about the charaters make sense and fall into place. Also, because it is about the expression of very strong feelings so basically about acting through singing, it is unavoidable not to imagine Gerry doing this part and longing for it, only to realise that this will never happen because there are far too many narrow minded, prejudicd critics and brainless members of the audience who listen to those critics for Gerry to even have a chance in this. Even my hasband said himself, without me bringing up Gerry at all, that G would be great in it, far more appropriate than for POTO!

Has someone else seen the new revamped version? Did you form the same opinion as me ?

Theresa

P.S. I think the end of LND does not tie up with the beginning of the film but I need to check. What are your thoughts?

More reviews are coming in. And this one surprised me...Mark Shenton was one of the worst critics when Love Never Dies opened. It seems he has changed his tune.

Thanks, Deb, for the links!

Seems like it has been reworked since I saw it last August. And no matter what anyone says, I hope and pray they get it to a place where it becomes as popular as the first one and I think that could be accomplished. Also, I can see Gerry reprising the role again if it did become good enough that ALW see's fit to make another film again. You never know sometimes. I'd love to see a new, revamped version on Broadway someday and I would be in seventh heaven if Gerry did a short run with it as well as the original movie cast! Wouldn't that be absolutely the bomb? Just maybe a couple of special performances.

My first wish; when I wrote to Andrew Lloyd Webber was that there be a sequel. Many fans told me that it would never happen... ... ... now it is that a second movie version be made of the sequel with the original cast from the first....I am nothing if not optimistic!

I have not seen the actual show, but I did get to see pretty much the whole production through boot legged videos on youtube (that have since been taken down by RUG) These videos were taken of the original LND before the changes made in November. Based on what I saw I did not like the show. My problem is with the plot and certainly not the performers, who in my opinion are extraordinary in their roles. Interesting. The actor who stood out the most for me in the these videos was Joseph Millson, who is brilliant as Raoul. I found his take on the character much more interesting than Raoul in the original POTO. Because he has a hint of darkness and is a deeply conflicted character, LND Raoul is actually sexier and more manly. However, having said that, his gambling and alcoholic ways do not fit with the POTO Raoul. Neither do Madame Giry and Meg's LND characters fit with original POTO.

My biggest problem though is with the idea that the Phantom and Christine had a sexual encounter 10 years prior to when the events of LND takes place. That to me weakens the entire structure of the story. Even with the changes installed in November, these weak plot elements have not been changed.

:detect:While I am with you on that point Swannie; I have always dreamt that somehow; after the Phantom's exit through the broken mirror; Christine returned to him if only to appease his broken heart. Through out the movie; she seemed a bit cruel to him; removing his mask twice and this last meeting;tells me that in her young heart; she really felt compassion for him and his plight. The child for me is a continuation of the Genius that was then and will always be known as "The Phantom".. I found that they made my hero (Madame Giry) to be harsh and uncaring and even greedy; which is not the way she was in the original movie after all she saved Erik which started the entire storyline to begin with. Not to mention poor Meg who is turned into nothing less then a strumpet who would do anything for the Phantom's attention...But I have faith in the tweaks and am sure the Andrew will iron out all the "bumps"..

May, I think the issue for me is less about the 2 of them actually getting together, and more about the fact that it was basically a one night stand, and that after Erik finally had her in his arms, the next morning HE LEFT HER and did not go after her again until 10 years after that night. That's what does not fit with Erik's character. If Christine had gone back to him, he would have NEVER walked out on her.

Erik and Christine never got out of that initial first stage of their relationship, you know the one that's all wine and roses, full of mystery and then discovery and the promise of all that hot passion to come! They never got to the phase of settling in to a life together, paying bills, arguing about capes left on the lair floor, stockings left hanging to dry on the guilded mirrors and who's going to take little Gustave to soccer practice. For all we know, if Christine had chosen him, they might have been divorced by now and fighting over who gets the gondola! :reddeath2::rotflmao:

It's official....I will be seeing Love Never Dies on May 28th in London!!!!

That's great, Deb! I hope the new and improved version is....new and improved!

Through out the movie; she seemed a bit cruel to him; removing his mask twice and this last meeting;tells me that in her young heart; she really felt compassion for him and his plight.

It's always disheartening when a man writing from the perspective of a female character, depicts them this way. Who would do that unless they had already done the "nasty" and she felt they had moved to that level of intimacy.

I just thought of something.....he must have left the mask on "during"! O...M.....G! Get your freak on!

:detect:My understanding of the Lyrics is that he left her because he felt he was not fit to keep her in the fashion she desired (hence wedding Raoul). He went away to make something of him self something that he could offer her (all be it 10 years later...Lol);money and prestige. She could never have survived living in the Lair and having been discovered; it was no longer a place even for him. I think he had to go far away; before being found and hung; even Madame Giry knew this and that is why she arranged for his passage to America. Time passes in the blink of an eye; I understand that part; and the child was at first questionable (was he Raoul's or the Phantom's child?" Back then; they had nothing but time to go by and the child's character traits. There will always be pros and cons about this sequel; I for one am elated at the out come..all be it ten years after the fact. It took that long for Christine and Raoul's marriage to start falling apart. Many marriages in that era were of convenience for women not born of blue blood..Raoul's marriage to her was not accepted by his family; this is one of the reasons he struggled to maintain it at all costs and in the end lost.

Based on the lyrics of Beneath A Moonless Sky, the reason the Phantom left Christine after they made love is because he was afraid that she would wake up and see his face, and he was afraid of her rejection once again, which is silly, because in the original POTO she kissed him and showed him by her actions that she was no longer afraid or repulsed by his face. IMO, the Phantom of the original ALW POTO would never have deserted her after finally becoming one with the love of his life. That's my problem with the basic plot structure.

It stands to be seen if all Phantom fans will view the same angle of the story. I know only what has been mentioned lately;that it is being revamped due to the critics and by the time (if ever) it goes to the big screen; hopefully the original cast will be reprising their roles. I would love to hear Gerry's raspy voice again and he does have that voice that both threatens and adores..Only HE can bring the depth to this story with his special talent.
