Gerry on SNL

Reviews are coming in ... not so great. EW actually said that Gerry was underused. Shocker since they usually don't like him.

I have to agree. He was brilliant where used and not used enough. He was spot on last night. I can't wait until he gets the chance to do it again. Hopefully beer and wheat will have gotten a room by then leaving more air time for Gerry.

I loved his performance on SNL! I've been looking all over the internet to see it, so I'm extremely happy I found the videos on here.

My fave was the B&B skit, but also loved Daveheart and his message to Scotland :D Oh and of course the MOTN bit :D Ninjaaaas.

Loved it! The Scottish-to-English bit had me rolling on the floor. Daveheart was fun too, esp. the goat he thought was a dragon. In the B&B sketch when the candelabra said he once dated a Menorah I almost fell out of bed!

Congrats, Gerry on a job VERY well done! We loved it.

Just watching the weekend update skit again. Just after Gerry says ''its what folks here call a New York moment'', and then the guy translates '' I may or may not have slept with a prostitute last night'' - Look at Gerrys mouth, it looks like he is saying that sentence to himeslf. Can anyone else see that or am I just seeing things?

This is my favourite skit. It made me laugh soooo much!!!

Gerry could stand there looking at the wall and he would be phenom in my book. I enjoyed that he had so much fun w/it. I think they underused him to piss us fans off. I mean it took them long enough to bring him on the show then they don't use him as much as they could have. I thought the opening skit w/Obama was absolutely DUMB and to an extent a bit insulting. Last I checked Obama doesn't sound like a caveman but then again I was so uninterested in it maybe I didn't see the humor. Gerry was fookin adorable and I hope he does a full on comedy soon because I would be first in line to see it.

I'm still laughing over the white pimp suit! :lmao: That was hilarious.

Let's face it ... the writing is horrible and Gerry was the only good thing on the show. I loved that he sang so much. The Beauty and the Beast skit was really funny. We all knew they would do a 300 thing ... and the Daveheart was a crack up. The secretary thing - even Gerry couldn't save that one. I wanted to smash her face in. The Weekend Update was cute with the Scottish speak.

Gerry was fantastic and he looked like he had a great time. I'm so very proud of him. :wuv:

I totally agree. That was by far the least funny skit of the night. How would that even seem funny to anyone writing or rehearsing it? Still good to see more Gerry though. I liked him in the suit with his hair parted on the side. It looked very Neil Randall to me.

Steph

yeah, I agree he looked very Neil in that skit...actually, it was the first thing I thought!! I like the clean shaven look too (well, to be frank...I like all his looks!!) :wuv:

He did a really great job :)

I cracked up at the ninja's from the opening and Beauty and the Beast was the best!

They should have let him open the show and shout out "Live form NY"

I was so waiting for that and it didn't happen....uuugh

OMG the pimp suit! He saved that skit because it was just annoying before Gerard came on.

This show has been sucky for years now and I think it's only still alive because people look forward to the guest host and the musical talent that performs. They need new writers

He did really good for his first time hosting and he should be very proud xoxo

I think maybe Gerry would be great to play "the Beast" on Broadway! Give him a chance to sing again and the character suits him! Whatdayathink?

My favorite was when he was singing MOTN in the beginning! I just melted! Then seeing him in the white suit dancing, I thought I'd loose my breath laughing! Hey girls, was that "tongue" action for the GALS who requested more of Mr Pinky? I think so. And also, at the end of the show, when he was thanking everyone, I almost held my breath and waited to hear him thank his fans, or girlies or GALS but he said, "everyone I like" and for me, that was close enough! "We like you too, Gerry, a real lot!"

Hey, I think I'll try to get on as a writer on SNL. As crappy as I am, it could only improve!

I think you should, D!! You certainly entertain us more on the board than they did on SNL.

I guess I'm in the minority ... I wasn't that impressed with his opening monologue and the whole POTO Meets 300 thing. To me, it just pigeonholed him ... "I do two types of movies." Bullsh*t, Gerry. He didn't even plug LAC. So I was a bit disappointed with the beginning.

He totally redeemed himself in that white pimp suit, though. :lmao: Someone PLEASE get me a cap of that!

Well, to be honest, I haven't watched Saturday Night Live in years....and unless Gerry hosts again I probably won't be staying up to see it again. I couldn't help wishing that Gerry could have played some scenes with Belushi, Chase, Gilda Radna...etc. I must be getting old because some of these skits (like the Obama one and the Sports one to me just weren't funny at all...even the one with Gerry and the cottage cheese. In the old days I think the writers could have taken that skit (making cottage cheese sexy again)...and really made it hysterical.

Gerry on the other hand was fantastic...loved him as Dave, the cowardly brother; and the Beast (who actually WAS the beauty...lol) and my heart almost jumped out of my chest with the first notes from Music of the Night....I wish he could have sang more....would have loved to have seen him do a skit where he was a Jim Morrison type and could have done some more singing...

Loved the bumper stickets ....but where is the kilt one? :tantrum:

Mr. Pinky also made it worth staying up waaay past my bedtime...lol. :wuv:

hugs,

Sue

I want to mention the 'sports' thing when he did the Southern accent. I remember Michael Caine once saying that a Southern accent was the easiest thing for a UK actor to do when it came to US accents. Gerry was right on with it. MC must have know from where he spoke.

Being from the DEEP SOUTH, after his first utterance I turned to RandomLanda and said, "Oh, gosh, he needs to stay away from the Southern accents!" IMO it was HORRIBLE, but THAT is what made it funny!!

Outside of the opening skit, I think my favorite was when he spoke Scots. (Although, hearing him sing "Beauty and the Beast" set me a-quiverrin' also :cunning: )

I was thinking the same thing. I missed the first 30 minutes of the show in real-time, so I had already read that Gerry did a Southern accent when I got around to seeing it, and I was not impressed! How strange to hear a mix of fake Southern and Scottish in the same sentence! Adorable though.

Steph pretty good transcript but I am sure he said dram instead of draft as that is what we call a drink of whisky here in Scotland a dram.

Moira

Thanks Moira, I've updated it. I was thinking draft like a draft beer. And yeah, I had no idea what that word (or words) was that I wrote down as mahutmagandy... At that point Gerry was fighting to keep himself from laughing, so it was that much harder to understand him. So great though. :)

I also absolutely loved when they put the camera on him during Weekend Update and the caption said "Gerard Butler, Scottish." I think they really did a good job playing up the Scottish thing. I loved it in the opening monologue when he said that it was his first time hosting, and therefore he had hosted more than any other Scot! :D

I agree it was weird hearing the southern accent come out of his mouth. In general I don't like to hear a fake southern or midwestern accent, they are often overdone making us sound uneducated. I think Gerry pimpin as the Sexacutioner White Peace was the funniest skit. You know how if you listen to a song enough times it replays in your head and you catch yourself humming parts of it or even singing it? I can't go to work tomorrow with What Up With That? running in my head! I have watched it so many times I caught myself humming it while folding laundry earlier. Teasing understood but please no judging.

Same here! I went running shortly after watching this again today and I was bouncing along going "wwooooooweeee, what up with that?" I felt like a geek, but I couldn't help it! It was even drowning out the music from my MP3 player!

Maria I totally agree! The opening threw me off, there were far to many commericals,he was the saving grace for the pimp suit skit.At first I was like wtf then when he came on as the Sexecutioner, I fell out! Channeling his inner James Brown/Michael Jackson/Elvis..That was too much I bet he does a helluva moonwalk!

I'm with you Sue. You named the glory days of SNL. I also haven't watched it in years because the writing doesn't match what I used to love about SNL. I was also disappointed that Gerry didn't do a rock skit in the foam of Jim Morrison since he always talks about him. They could have used Gerry in a more funny way than they did. I always hate the "300" Gay jokes. It demeans the movie, in my opinion. My favorite parts were when Gerry went Scottish. I could listen to him talk Scots all day. Although he did do a really funny English accent.

Gerry looked like he was having fun and that makes me happy. He really put all of himself in those skits, not like some hosts who just read the lines. He was very good and I was impressed at how well he did. He didn't even look nervous in the beginning.

I’m glad to hear most felt as I did – the only skits worth sitting through were the ones with GB in them. I haven’t watched an episode of SNL in about 15 years. The show was not funny – Gerry’s skits were good and I did enjoy seeing him enjoy himself. I’m so thankful he was able to do the “Update” skit in his native tongue. Thankfully the writers seemed to understand singing and dancing are of his many talents. I only wish they would have penned a scene in a pub where he could get up and sing..... ah, maybe next time he hosts!!! I agree - I've can't recall a "guest" introducing the show before - shame on them - he was indeed underutilized. Good for him though for getting the opportunity and making the most of it.

I do believe the dress rehearsal skits that were shown from the past few years were funnier than the balance of last nights show.

Andrea – way to go! Sounds like you had a blast.

Yay Andrea!! I'm so happy you got in! I was actually thinking about you while I was watching the show. :D

Alright, I "transcribed" the weekend update just for shites and giggles. There was at least one word in the final string that I couldn't match to anything in the English language, so let me know if any of you guys have any ideas on it. :)

Ma, da, look at me up here! I'm on the tele!

Mother, father, look at me. I'm on the television.

I'm a wee bit knackered from the week, and I hope tonight goes well.

I'm a little bit sleepy-tired but I know tonight will be 100% awesome.

This week has been fan-dabby-dosy; most fun since I made 300. Man, that movie was great!

This week has been good. This is the most fun I've had since I made 300. Man, that movie was gay.

New York is pure dead brilliant, by the way. There are so many colorful characters!

I have met a lot of Jewish people.

I was walking home from the studio last night. The buildings were all lit up, and I bumped into this real bonnie bird near the park. Turns out she was staying right at my hotel! It's what folks here call a "New York moment."

I may or may not have slept with a prostitute last night.

Oh and hey, little cousin Donald, if you're watching right now, I've got a message for you: get your a$$ over here all right man, cause we've got a bit of mahutmegandi[?] and I cannot get my own for sh*t alright so just get yourself here, we'll have a dram, and it'll all be great.

I definitely slept with a prostitute last night.

Well that's it, I guess. I miss you all, and I can't wait to see you again and hear the sweet bells of Paisley abbey.

I'm never coming back to Scotland.

I think this was my favorite. :)

Steph

Great translating, Steph! Yes, I do believe he did indeed say "Mahatma Gandhi" as in .."we got a bit of Mahatma Gandhi (LOVE and FORGIVENESS.....as in SEX ~ slang term)," and I think the rest is: "and I'm gonna get my own for sure (SNL doesn't permit cussing so s**t doesn't fit), alright, so just get yourself over here, we'll have a dram and it'll all be great!"

I forgot to mention - thought it was so cool to see him reach back to assist Kristen Wiig(?) at the end of the monologue - seemed so instinctive on his part. I just love gallantry.

I also loved the look he shot Seth when he translated the movie was so "gay" instead of great!
