I was listening when I was on my way to see LAC yesterday and I had a moment where I lost my breath, and shook my head; suddenly unable to believe it was actually him singing! I could see Jude Law in the role, and Higgins does not have to be a good singer. He just has to have the ability to talk/sing very precisely in a perfect British dialect. Higgins as written in the musical by Lerner & Lowe doesn’t need to have a terrific singing voice, the role was written for Rex Harrison who did not sing at all. I think both Gerry and Daniel Craig would be wrong for this. I think Eliza should be played by an actress who sings. I would like to see Gerry in a musical. But not this one. I mean he played a Spartan and then he got his arse whooped good and proper by Pierce Brosnan in Shattered. He is not good for just one kind of role. I think he is highly versatile. Rex Harrison doesn't strike me as a Wuss either. Jen Ellison could turn her scouse accent into cockney accent. She does musicals on stage quite a bit. Though I would not be an idiot to say she can sing as well as Emmy. I would love to see Emmy and Jen both get more roles as well as Patrick. I think they are all great. I can't believe there are some people on this planet that that think Gerry cannot sing. Some of the Phantom Phans are really cruel about Gerry's singing and I have listened to other versions on You Tube and yeah I am biased as hell, but I like Gerry's best because of the raw sexuality of his voice. So Earthy and vulnerable. O.K. whether he makes or not. I would want what makes him happy. I would make another musical if I were him just to piss off all the people who think he cannot sing. I am sure you all may want to beat me about the head for this comment...but, honestly, although I absolutely adored GJB in Phantom (which is where I first saw him and fell, fell, fell), I don't think he sounded as good as he could have on SNL, sorry. But, as has been said, the roll of Prof. Higgins does not necessarily demand a voice, like, say, Howard Keel's or Gordon MacRae's (for those of you who remember them). I loved Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn and they ARE My Fair Lady to me...although that was not Audrey Hepburn's voice we heard in the movie. They probably want to remake it to draw in new generations, that's just my guess. I also question why everything has to be a remake, but there really are no musicians like Lerner and Lowe and Rogers & Hammerstein and Gershwin anymore. And if a remake brings new filmgoers to appreciate this beautiful music, I'm ok with that. I actually think Gerry would do a great job as Higgins, so would Patrick Wilson as he has a beautiful voice and was the first performer cast for POTO. He is not Gerry, but he can be pretty dreamy, too. Just have to add that when Marlon Brando was a young performer he was gorgeous and definately had charisma, but wasn't a great singer...check him out in "Guys and Dolls" if you have never seen it. At that age he was a pretty "hot ticket" and quite masculine like our GJB! I would watch Gerry read a book, sweep the floor, watch tv, brush his teeth, whatever, how could anything he does be less than charming, huh? Ahhhhh...Leslie PS...we already know he has proven that he can do whatever he tackles and do it well...he is the quintessential "man of a thousand faces." L. Howard Keel and Gordon MacRae LOVE both of them and melt into a puddle when listening (and watching, they were cutie pies!) As for Gerry on SNL, I don't think it was his intention to sound good, but his bad rendition wasn't bad enough, so it came off as him trying to sound good. Does that make sense to anyone? Making a remake just for the sake of making something "relatable to a younger audience"....is silly. I`m in "young audience", and yet I`ve seen the original. The whole reason anyone ever does remakes, is they simply cannot think of an original idea to do...and if they can`t, thats their problem...and it doesn`t give them the right to top something that cannot nor should not be topped. and as far as Gerry`s singing on SNL...my guess is as to why he didn`t sing as sharply was for one, comedic reasons, and secondly the fact that he hasn`t sung on a regular basis in a while. Phantom was made almost 5 years ago, and even then Gerry spent months and months prepping his voice with all kinds of training for the role. Flash forward 5 years and that person does not keep singing on regular basis, then obviously it will take a toll on how well they can sing. A voice is like an instrument, if you stop playing it, youre skills are going to get rusty, there is no avoiding that. and Gerry was only rehersing the skits, what 6 days, if that....practicing singing for that short period of time does not bring the voice right back to its ship-shape condition.....just my 2 cents... His talent is too above the lousy remakes and sequels of the world....and I know I`m not alone in thinking this. I suspect if he did do another musical he would no doubt spend a lot more time prepping then the few days SNL allowed. It’s a pity Chicago has already been done because Gerry would have been terrific in that movie, far better then Richard Gere. But then maybe Rob Marshall could do Guys & Dolls, I never liked the Brando & Sinatra version. But Gerry as Sky Masterson? Jack Black as Nathan Detroit? I really have to agree that I like his original movies best, especially where he really gets into making the character so authentic. He's THE master at that, and that's when I enjoy his performances best. I would not want to be any actor that one day has to attempt to remake something GJB has done, that would be daunting, impossible. And although The Ugly Truth was good, I didn't think it measured up to what he can bring to a movie. He, however, had the best performance of all the actors in that movie. But I love that he isn't afraid to tackle all genres. He's much more capable than most actors we have today. Or maybe it's simply his drive for perfection. As we all know, that's why a lot of people don't know who he is... because he is so great at creating the character, not just being Gerard Butler in different clothing. I think you also said something before about how Phantom fans have been hard on him. I agree. I have seen 3 or 4 international companies perform the Phantom. Each time with a different actor as the Phantom. One thing I have loved each time is that in this particular show each actor has made the Phantom a bit different and made him their own. It's a very personal role and nicely transformable. That was the first movie I saw him in, and only earlier this year. At first I didn't even notice how handsome he was because I was so astonished at the emotion he gave to the Phantom. The performance was one of the best I've ever seen. How many times do you think the story of that has been done? One thing I know for certain, and I am at least twice your age, is that I'm learning something new every day and at the tender age of 21, I knew absolutely nothing. But that was me. Sometimes you have to open up your heart and your mind to new possibilities, whether you like them or not.
