Knight Phantom
I found this in my alerts, and thought I'd share. US duo win second figure-skating Grand Prix (AFP) – 1 day ago NAGANO, Japan — Four Continents champions Meryl Davis and Charlie White won their second Grand Prix ice dance title of the season at the NHK Trophy Sunday, booking a place in the elite final of the series. The US duo danced to the music of "The Phantom of the Opera" without making mistakes to earn 100.79 points in the free dance, the final section of the three-part ice dance competition. They finished with a total score of 201.97 points, bettering their previous personal best of 201.10 they marked in winning the season's second Grand Prix, the Rostelecom Cup in Moscow, two weeks ago. British siblings Sinead and John Kerr finished a distant second with 177.73 and Canada's Vanessa Crone and Paul Poirier were third at 165.89. The NHK Trophy was the fourth event of the six-stage ISU Grand Prix series. In the series, each skater is allowed to compete in just two events. The best six in points standings in men's and women's singles as well as pairs and ice dance qualify for the Grand Prix Final in Tokyo in early December. The Kerrs, who were third at the season-opening Grand Prix, the Trophee Eric Bompard in Paris, bungled on a synchronised twizzle as they danced to "Krwling" by Linkin Park. They collected 86.16 points in the free-dance section and Crone and Poirier 84.51. "It feels really good," White said. "I think me and Meryl skated well." "It's just a testament to how much practice we put into it," the 22-year-old University of Michigan student said of the high score he earned with Davis. "We've been together for 13 years now and I think it has finally started to pay off." Davis and White won the US national championships last season when five-time champions Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto pulled out. They placed fourth at the world championships where Belbin and Agosto were runners-up to Russia's Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin. Copyright © 2009 AFP. All rights reserved. Knight Phantom
The Ice Dancing pair of Meryl Davis and Charlie White win 2010 US Figure Skating Championship! http://www.lifeskate.com/skate/2010/01/201...e-win-gold.html 2010 US Figure Skating Championships: Meryl Davis and Charlie White win gold Maybe the torch was passed tonight for American ice dancing at the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane, Washington? Meryl Davis and Charlie White (at right) took their second consecutive Meryl Davis and Charlie White perform free dance to Phantom of the Opera U.S. Nationals title over Tanith Belbin and Benjamin Agosto, who had won it five times in the past. Tanith and Ben did not compete at Nationals last year due to injuries, so this was the first time this season that the two teams went head to head. Both programs were very dramatic and theatrical -- Tanith and Ben skated to Ave Maria and Amen for the free dance and Meryl and Charlie skated to Phantom of the Opera. This rivalry is just the beginning -- both teams are headed to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics and Tanith and Ben are already familiar with the Olympic experience, having won silver in 2006. The U.S. can send three ice dance teams so most likely the third team will be bronze medalists Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates. The 19 and 20 year olds beat veteran team Kimberly Navarro and Brent Bommentre for the bronze so perhaps another torch was passed tonight? But Kimberly and Brent get the award for Most Joyful Performance with their free dance to One by U2 and Mary J. Blige. Kim had a huge smile for the entire four minutes so genuine that the audience was brought into the duo's happiness from beginning to end. ________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________ http://dailypostal.com/2010/01/23/meryl-da...bin-and-agosto/ Meryl Davis and Charlie White beats Belbin and Agosto January 23, 2010 By dailypost Five-time U.S. champions Belbin and Agosto have been beaten by Meryl Davis and Charlie White at the U.S. Championships ice dance competition. Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto’s record score in 2008 of 216.09, has also been surpassed by Davis and White — a meet record score of 222.29 for the University of Michigan juniors. Meryl Davis and Charlie White danced on Saturday to the “Phantom of the Operaâ€. Davis, 23, and White, 22, who have been skating together for nearly 14 years, delighted the Spokane Arena crowd with their eye-catching lifts, especially one in which they were positioned in opposite directions. She is sitting on the back of his shoulders, with her arms spread, balancing her left leg on White’s right calf as he skates backward. Belbin and Agosto, the 2006 Olympic silver medalists, relentlessly downplayed the significance of winning a sixth title, saying they were treating this as a final practice for the OIympics, a rationalization that effectively made a mockery of nationals, LA Times reports. Lady Elissa
That was fantastic! The only way it would have been better is if they had used Gerry's voice. Thanks for posting the link, Deb!
Knight Phantom
Good Morning Ladies! We have another Olympic skater doing a Phantom themed programme!! I love it! Gives me more reason to watch... Full article here http://www.windsorstar.com/sports/2010wint...7798/story.html His Phantom Of The Opera-themed long program, mapped out by Nichol, is a little masterpiece if he skates it the way he can. “Last year, I had a concerto, which really had no story to it.,†Chan said. “With Phantom of the Opera, I can really interpret that story in the program, so the audiences as well as the judges will be able to connect with it. This program is still giving me goosebumps and I’ve had it for almost a year, so I think that’s a good sign.†
Spartandax
They also won the US national gold medal which is an automatic ride to the Olympics. It starts Feb. 12th and I can't wait. I love the Winter Olympics best and can't wait to see them skate to Phantom again. Actually, although they used MC's voice in MOTN, they did use the theme from the movie and also some of the ending (orchestral) from the movie. Everytime POTO is used it also helps out wonderful Phantom Erik (Gerry) too. Anne Edited February 5, 2010 by Spartandax
