Thriller's got style to die for

By Mark Adams

22/11/2009THE VERDICT

This glossy revenge thriller provides explosions, action and an engagingly preposterous storyline, but it is never as gripping as it should be, and Gerard Butler is increasingly unconvincing as a leading man.

It starts promisingly as Clyde rages against smooth lawyer Nick Rise (an impressive Jamie Foxx), but soon slips into Saw mode.

It tries to pose questions about the nature of the legal system, but any subtlety gets lost among the explosions, gunfire and falling bodies.

FINAL CUT 3

Stylish crime thriller delivers the thrills.

"Increasingly unconvining as a leading man?" Are they on drugs? What's wrong with these people? Gerry is one of the best exports Britain's ever had and this is what he gets? It's such deja vu for me. He is going through exactly what George Michael was going through with the British press. On one hand they call them "posers" for trying to make it big and doing well in the US and on the other hand they are not prepared to give them half a chance at home! For some strange reason, George became a favourite boy once he "came out". Go figure...

"Damning with feint praise" - they can't seem to decide if they like it or they don't. I agree, they're whacked as far as Gerry's concerned. Without him, that film would have faded without a ripple. He makes it worth watching.

Why is it then that I got the message that the movie was making? The justice system is flawed and screwed up. Why is it that this reviewer did not get that message? I thought it was a good film. Even my father liked the film, and me and him do not always agree on movies.
