excerpt:

"As the film moves along, Butler shows a range that makes his character into something of a sympathetic vigilante, a vulnerable but determined man with nothing to live for but justice and nothing to lose except for the lifeblood that flows through his body, his truer essence having perished along with his wife and daughter. As the film progresses and his quest for vengeance turns into a game of demented pain and vast revenge, he morphs into a bigger, seemingly more dangerous shell of his former self. With every step, Butler plays the character with a believable and altogether fascinating edge, making his one of the more complex and engrossing characters of the past several years. "

some great screen shots with the article too.

This reviewer definitely seemed to "get" this movie. However, those who find the plot implausible have never been caught up in the US legal "system". On a deeply personal level - I can absolutely understand Clyde's motivation. I wish I didn't, but the unfortunate fact is that I do - totally, thoroughly, completely.

Loving the positive reviews. It's about time. And you're right Catwoman, I think a lot of people lack the perspective to truly appreciate this movie. Law school and learning about our f**ked up legal system has devoured my soul. LAC was a cathartic release after all that. :) A little less than two and half weeks til the DVD!! :D

I suspect this will be a movie where the critical consensuses will be revised over time, as different voices weigh in, Stephen King, Variety and so forth. I'm so glad more people are beginning to appreciate how good Gerry was in this movie.

Two minds with but a single thought...

Tell you what though - when I was going through my travails with the legal system, know what got me through? Believe it or not - watching 300. For two years, I watched that movie every single day and sometimes more than once in a day. If I may be so bold as to suggest: Once you get LAC, when the goin' gets tough, the tough watch Clyde! Try it. It might just work for ya! Then get your JD and give 'em he11, GALFriend!

I too have seen and know the real evils the legal system is capable of, as well as the medical system. I have seen the underbelly of both such "prestigious" institutions....and trust me when I say this, both have a disturbingly ugly side. One of the best things about LAC in my opinion, was the honest depiction of the dark side of the legal system and the atrocious things done in it. I, more than I could ever possibly explain, understand Clyde`s motives and actions.

I've been tinkering with the idea to get a Blu-Ray for a while, however my TV is on the edge of blowing up and I was advised to wait until I have a decent new TV (which will take a while) before I even attempt it. What's the different features on the Blu-Ray version compared to DVD? We don't have any information on it yet.

I really can't speak highly enough on this movie and I'm glad to see that some critics are able to open their eyes and see the brilliance that it is. I was speechless at the end (as well as shedding tears). I too know the horror of the "justice" system many times over and I know that my parents had a few moments when they felt a little like Clyde for similar reasons. I do as well at times when I think back on it. It was refreshing to be able to live vicariously through it and put the point across about how it feels for us on the outside when being dragged through the sludge they believe is just their "job". It felt like someone could finally listen to us. Am I the only one who finds it a relief that way?

What a great review of Gerry's performance!! Thank you for the link.

LAC just opened a couple of days ago in Australia and I finally got to see it tonight after a false start earlier in the day. The first time, the sound broke part the way through the movie, just when Clyde started his hatchet job on Clarence. Several people got up to report the sound problem and then eventually management said they didn't know what the problem was or when it would be fixed and offered refunds and complimentary tickets. But dammit I wanted to see the movie. :tantrum: I ended up going to a different cinema later in the day.

Anyway, I loved it and I thought Gerry was wonderful as Clyde.

Cheers,

Vicki

Oh, that's awful! I'm so sorry it caused so much havoc, but you managed to see it either way, so that's the main part. Off-topic I know, however what part of Australia are you?

After patiently waiting for the release of LAC I finally got to see it on the weekend. WOW, this movie is fantastic.... It had me on the edge of my seat for the full duration of the movie. Loved it so much, I plan to go back again next weekend. I have also put my name down at the cinema for the poster. Hopefully we dont have to wait forever for it to be released on DVD too!

Cheers

I'm hoping to go again next weekend, too! BTW, at the 2 cinemas I went to on Saturday, they had posters for The Bounty Hunter. :)

So true. Personally, I find it funny when people talk about this movie and refer to Nick as "corrupt." There was nothing technically wrong with Nick's conduct, and he was well within his prosecutorial discretion to make the deal that he did. He was not "corrupt." That being said, there's something very wrong with a system which not only calls for, but legitimates such a miscarriage of justice.

What a great review of Gerry's performance!! Thank you for the link.

The same sort of thing happened to me a few years ago, Vicki! I think it was for the 4th Indiana Jones movie. I went with my parents and convinced them to drive a little further out to a new theatre that presented films in all digital DLP projection. About ten minutes into the movie the power went out to the entire shopping center. We all sat patiently for about ten minutes before a theatre rep came in and said that they didn't know when it would be back on, so they were giving out rain checks. My parents would have been fine just going home and going back to that theatre another day, but I really really wanted to see the film! We ended up driving to a different (ironically, closer) theatre and watching it on standard projection. Oh life.

For all of you lovely Aussie ladies who just had a chance to see LAC, feel free to browse the discussion thread that was started during the US release. It's here: Law Abiding Citizen- Gals' reviews and discussion. It's 11 pages of discussion on all facets of the film. :)

This really was a very positive review. I agree he "gets" it. I think the implausibility of the film doesnt have to do with the legal system and its flaws, but with the fact that Clyde ends up being this super secret brain guy and was able to tunnel into and repeatedly escape prison without detection. THAT is pretty implausible, BUT I am a total suspension of disbelief kinda gal when it comes to most movies. And as the reviewer said ... it was FUN.

Just got a blu-ray player, and I have a feeling LAC will be my first purchased Blu-Ray disc. wOOOOOOOt

Ah, we're neighbors, Adelaide here. I haven't been to Melbourne in a while. Much more of an exciting city that ours.

I had heard rumors that there was going to be an unrated director's cut of LAC but it would only be available on BluRay. Been puttin' away my pennies, nickels and dimes, and finally have enough squirreled away and will be picking up a BRP the same day I pick up the LAC disk. Can't wait!!!

:tantrum:

Not only can I not afford a Bluray right now... I LOVE my DVD player! It's a five disc changer-- I use slots 1 through 3 for whatever TV shows I'm watching on DVD at the moment, slot 4 is reserved for Gerry movies, and slot 5 is miscellaneous movies. Helps keep me organized. Plus, it has an HDMI upscale, so even regular DVDs come out almost HD quality on my pretty new TV. So, moral of the story is I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO BUY A NEW PLAYER JUST TO SEE ONE MOVIE, EVEN IF IT IS MY FAVORITE ONE!

Sorry for screaming. I figure maybe if I yell loud enough the darn DVD people will hear me...

I'm in the same boat, Steph. I can't see buying a new player just for one movie. My son has a PS3 so I'll end up renting the blue ray LAC and watching it downstairs ... if I can sift through the trash, clothes and video game crap and find the TV. Oy, my poor 22 year old ... is a typical 22 bachelor.

Anyway, that's what will end up happening here ...
