Hobbes
The Bounty Hunter has received a Razzie (Golden Raspberry) Award nomination as Worst Picture of the Year. G has received a nomination for Worst Actor Jennifer Aniston has received a nomination for Worst Actress and together they were nominated for Worst On-Screen Ensemble/Couple. I'm under no delusions that The Bounty Hunter was high-art, but whatever it was I enjoyed it. There were some genuinely funny moments and, of course, G running around in a towel. My needs are simple. I have to laugh at these nominations and I hope you will too. This is definitely a case of "there's no such thing as bad publicity." In my humble opinion,in some cases it is better to be at one extreme or the other rather than in the middling middle. I'm sure that G and JA will laugh all the way to the bank. (There will be people who will want to see THE WORST as much as others want to see the best) and it will keep people talking about them and the movie. The year Halle Berry won an Academy Award as Best Actress for 'Monster's Ball,' she also won a Razzie as Worst Actress for 'Catwoman.' She obviously got the joke because she showed up to collect her Razzie as well as her Oscar. Should he win, I hope G does the same.
GBPhanatic
I believe Sandra Bullock got a razzie for her performance in All About Steve (that WAS a lame movie). The same year she won a Golden Globe for the Blind Side. Poor Gerry, if he'd just win a good award to offset the bad award, it might go down easier. But I never believed in awards of any kind because they are usually politically motivated. George C. Scott would never attend an awards ceremony and when he won an award, someone else would accept on his behalf. I'm sure when a script presents itself and an actor reads it, you can't always tell how it's going to work once on film because so much goes in to it like actor interaction, chemistry, timing, locations, technical aspects, etc. that have to come together. Those are all things you can't see ahead of time. I can see where reading the script for TBH would be funny on page but they really needed more slap stick stuff, like when Gerry was running across the golf course dodging golf balls and Jen needed to get messed up a bit. She looked too well groomed for a fugitive. I guess I think seeing people get hurt is always funny although when they broke that guys toe with a golf club that just seemed sadistic and made me gringe! They should have left that part out and just showed the guy getting ready to do something then cut off. Later have the guy hobbling around in a cast or something. That was like Monty Python meets Good Fellas or something. Too much stuff going on. I hope that Playing The Field fairs better. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Maybe if they throw Betty White in it, it'd be sure fire! She'd make a great antagonist to Gerry's character! ladyfran
Don't know if it does much for ones morale but I agree Sheri! I hope they can get a good laugh out of it and accept with good humor! Although I wasn't a big fan of the movie.....I still think there were better candidates out there for this IMO unnecessary award! Frannie
GBPhanatic
"there's no such thing as bad publicity." I'll go for that sometimes but what if all or the majority of it is bad? Then what? I'm not saying that's the case with Gerry, but even though we scoff at razzie awards and play down awards in general, don't they set the tone for actors in Hollywood and how they get the good future scripts? If you've got a few awards to the good under your belt, then one or two bad aren't going to hurt much and it just makes the actor look human and inperfect and we can't always win and all that. But what happens when you have more negative publicity then positive? It seems Hollywood is fond of the title "Oscar winning, or Oscar nominated" being attached to actors in films. And I know that doesn't always mean it will be a good one. I seriously think there's something wrong with many of the writers in Hollywood these days. I watch some of the old films and wonder why no one can write like that anymore. Is our society so dumbed down and lacking culture that all they feel sells in Hollywood is techno graphic affects and mind numbing dialogue? Perhaps there's too much nepitism in the industry. They have to revitalize things like True Grit to get a hit. I worry about Gerry sometimes that his popularity and attention he gets is defined mostly by his "hunky" persona more so then his abilities as an actor. Looks and sex appeal, I believe, will only take you so far and definately run dry as we age. And I do believe Gerry has the acting chops there but it's been getting buried somehow in poor scripts. I thought he did exceptional in Law Abiding Citizen and it was an awsome film. I'm surprised it did not get better recognition. I'm disappointed that Machine Gun Preacher is not premiering until fall. Gerry needed a substantial role like that to offset the memory of TBH right now. I enjoyed TBH and I thought it was funny in parts but for the most part, it was a bit flat. Gerry's most marketable asset, right now anyway, is his sex appeal it seems and that was even played down in this movie. I think they were trying to portray him as a kind of looser perhaps. Not sure why. It might have flown better had he been more of a Mike Chadway character with a tougher persona. Perhaps PTF will use his sex appeal to it's advantage at least but it will have to be a good script and funnier then TBH for sure and may they choose the leading lady wisely! Make her someone well known and age appropriate! No young unknowns! Gerry needs a substantial star to play off of like Julia Roberts or Kate Winslet. Also, even with a romcom, the story has to have some heart to it and chemistry between the actors or the romantic part is lost. I try to stand back and look at Gerry in a role as objective as I can and that's difficult sometimes. Why is that? I've never ever been this involved with an actor's career before so this is all been very enlightening, to say the least. I go to see his movies, first because he is in it, of course, but I see a lot of movies and I'm not a big fan of the romcom. But I yearn to see him play a substantial role that will show off his acting abilities. I'm hoping that MGP will be a good one for this and I think Burns would be another one, if that ever becomes a reality. Delene

shirsan
I have to say that I love Gerry's diversity. He does roles in all genres and I love that. He keeps his career active and he chooses his roles BECAUSE of something. He either needs a light romcom, or he feels he wants to get this subject out to the people, or he really loves this character. He mixes it up and it keeps his mind fresh. He isn't getting type cast into any one genre and that is great for his career. He is constantly proving his acting ability in that he can create and become any type of character. I love that he is career brilliant. Personally I loved TBH and TUT. They were both funny and yet Gerry made his character vulnerable and lovable. He far outshone his costars. I loved LAC because he again showed the character's vulnerability but also his strength and intelligence. Gerry chooses his parts for his own reasons. I also trust his choices. He is planning his career according to his own mind. He will always do fine. I do not believe that his strongest asset is his sexiness. I think that people are finally beginning to see the true Gerry, his real character and personality. These are the things that brought us to love this fine man. It has just taken the rest of the world a little longer. It has been proven that the ladies and gentlemen on this site are a little above average intelligence and sensibility. The talents on this site are amazing, and the love shared here goes far beyond the ordinary. The members here are sensitive to the needs of others and our inner beings seem to coincide with Gerry's sensitivity and intelligence. I have noted that among our members are professors, accountants, nurses, investors, writers, etc. All of the careers represented here require above average intelligence and sensitivity. That is why we responded to Gerry before your average individuals did. We saw in him the kind, caring, generous, sweet spirited man, not just the hunky actor. The rest of the world is just catching up, that's all. I hope Gerry and JA actually accept this award. You know Gerry will be hilarious and silly and so cute. He will win even more fans at this award acceptance than a good movie would. His character is such that he wins hearts with his vulnerability, and this will be the perfect stage for that. Love him absolutely, Sandy Edited January 24, 2011 by shirsan
AngelofMusic
I've always seen the Razzies as some silly joke anyway, they're not actually suppossed to be taken seriously. Awards, such as an Oscar or Golden Globe, they really aren't that important. I mean they serve their purpose, I guess, but so often those that recieve them, it has so much to do with political motivation or a popularity contest. I can recall so many actors that have never once been recognized for their work or their great purformances by those institutions. I was not crazy about The Bounty Hunter, it was very generic for me, and I think it really wasted Gerry's obviously overflowing talent. I'm really looking forward to his up-coming projects though, like Machine Gun Preacher, because I've said it before and I'll say it again that the genre that really works best for him is drama; his talents are just exceptionally showcased in drama better than a genre such as romantic-comedy. Lady Ski Bum
Gerry does not have to worry about scripts or being unpopular with the 'higher-ups' in Hollywood. He is a part of the 'higher-ups' with his executive producing and producing, the fact that he is now part of the select group of actors whose movies have brought in over $1 billion, fans around the world that love him, and he is just downright cute. What he might be sorry about is that he cannot physically be a part of all of the movies that he is receiving scripts for that he loves. Awards do not mean anything. Just take a look at the list of folks who have never received any. Bounty Hunter was a financial success and I really enjoyed it, as did many others. framolamdu
While I think it would say alot about Gerry if he won and chose to turn up and accept; the difference as pointed out Halle won the year before and could show with her Oscar and Sandra was Oscar nominated that same year and went on to win the next day. Gerry does not have that luxury of having a major award or major nomination under his belt. I genuinely believe that's why those 2 could show as they will always be known as "Academy Award Winner" in all their future film trailers. While I don't think the Razzies if won will harm his career I think with Coriolanus and MGP on the horizon this year he is looking for positive critical recognition and it would be wrong IMO of him to capitalise if won. If he didn't care about his standing in this town or with his peers then I'm sure alot of people would love him to come and spill the beans on the alleged farce that was TBH PR This reminds me of the hysterical Farrelly Brothers Trailer for Stick With You with Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear. Academy Award Winner MD Academy Award Nominee GK Academy Award Winner Cher and 5 times Academy Award watchers The Farrelly Brothers. I was hee hawing at that. phoenixgirl
I gotta agree that the Razzie's can't be taken seriously. It's the anti-Oscar and no big deal. If he wins, which he won't, it's not like he'll always be known as "Razzie Winner Gerard Butler". As for TBH, it was what it was ... a silly comedy. That's all it was supposed to be. It wasn't supposed to change lives or make a statement. So for what it was, it's pretty cute. Gerry looked great (but I think he looked better in TUT, Holly - JMO). Anyway, it's all in fun, and we know what Gerry's made of and I believe with Coriolanus and MGP he'll be showing the rest of the world. He's already considered an "A-Lister" so he's on his way. Donnachaidh
I couldn't agree more. Here's what Wikipedia has to say: Gerard James Butler (born 13 November 1969) is a Scottish [1] actor, who has appeared on film, stage, and television. A trained lawyer, Butler turned to acting in the mid-1990s with small roles in productions such as the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), which he followed with steady work on television, most notably in the American miniseries Attila (2001). He garnered critical acclaim for his breakthrough work as the lead in Joel Schumacher's 2004 film adaptation of the musical The Phantom of the Opera. In 2007, Butler gained worldwide recognition through his portrayal of King Leonidas in the film 300. Since then, he has appeared in projects including P.S. I Love You (2007), Nim's Island (2008), RocknRolla (2008), The Ugly Truth (2009), Gamer (2009), Law Abiding Citizen (2009) and The Bounty Hunter (2010). He was recently in Belgrade filming Coriolanus. My favorite quote is "he garnered critical acclaim for his breakthrough work as the lead. . .(in) The Phantom of the Opera". He will be given his due as a great actor.

Luckily "critical acclaim" is much better than criticism. It does mean acclaim from the critics, right?? I hope I'm not heralding a negative Wiki comment. I think if I ever had a chance to meet him, I'd like to tell him how utterly blown away I was by his singing. Every time I watch the movie, I hear some other little nuance that just adds to the effect. It was, for me, an astounding performance and it should have been a career maker instead of 300. Although, as you and I agree we thought Attila was da bomb!! Hugs, Burma:wave:

Delene Amen to that, and I don't think Gerry lets his sexiness define him as anything, not as a person or an actor. He has stated many times that he doesn't take any of that to heart, but that he would rather be considered sexy than not sexy, as anyone would. I think Gerry should show up at the razzies if he wins and be his usual funny and sexy self. He will win all kind of votes in the business for having enough of a sense of humor to show up and be funny. The razzies are supposed to be funny. That's the whole thing. It is a bit of an honor to be nominated for one, so why shouldn't he show that he has a sense of humor to go with all of his other assets? It doesn't hurt anyone's standing in the busienss to accept a razzy. Most really big stars show up just to show that they are human, not offended by the honor and have a great sense of humor. Sabina
I like TBH, it was funny and cute. I agree there were worth movies last year than TBH ("Killers" for example). I am pretty sure Gerry will have a good laugh out of this one. I hope it will bring him luck and he'll get some big award next year for Coriolanus or Machine-gun or both. I will keep my fingers cross.
