Sam Childers, the inspiration for the movie "Machine Gun Preacher," will attend screenings of the film on Sunday and Monday at Moviestar Cinema in Broken Arrow, where he will speak with the audience and answer questions.

Childers will speak after the 7 p.m. Sunday showing of the film as well as following the 4:15 p.m. and 7 p.m. screenings on Monday, said Derek Butler, a media director who works with Childers and who - as an Oral Roberts University graduate - pushed for the Tulsa-area appearance by Childers.

"People should know that they can ask Sam whatever they want. They may not always like his answer, but they'll always get one," Butler said.

Childers is also meeting with area pastors Sunday to tell his remarkable story: a former motorcycle-riding armed guard for drug dealers, he cleaned up his act, turned to God and eventually built one of the most renowned orphanages in the world in a dangerous area of the southern Sudan.

He did so with a "Bible in one hand and an AK-47 in the other," as described in his book "Another Man's War." The book was adapted into the film and stars Gerard Butler ("300") as Childers. Marc Forster ("The Kite Runner," "Finding Neverland") directs.

"Machine Gun Preacher" has a running time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and is rated R for disturbing images, language, some drug use and a scene of sexuality.

The film opens Friday at Moviestar Cinema, located at a shopping center on the southwest corner of 101st Street and 161st East Avenue in Broken Arrow.
