Gerard Butler in Talks for 'Point Break' Remake (Exclusive)

The Scottish actor may be catching a wave in the remake of the 1991 Keanu Reeves-Patrick Swayze action movie, which will be directed by Ericson Core.

The movie is eyeing a summer shoot with Ericson Core, the cinematographer behind 2001’s The Fast & the Furious and Daredevil, in the director’s chair.

Kurt Wimmer wrote the screenplay for the new film, which is set in the international world of extreme sports as opposed to the Southern California surf scene of the original. The plot of an FBI agent infiltrating a crime ring as well as the names of the principal characters remain the same.

Butler will play Bodhi, an expert extreme-sports athlete who also seeks to find nirvana through the conquest of a series of athletic feats such as surfing 100-foot waves. He saves Johnny Utah, the undercover FBI agent, and brings him into the fold of international criminals. The part of Utah is not cast yet.

Patrick Swayze played the part in the 1991 movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove are producing along with Michael DeLuca, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Wimmer.

Break is likely to solidify Butler’s dance card for the year. He will first shoot Liongate’s epic fantasy Gods of Egypt, which starts shooting in March, and close out the year with London Is Falling, the sequel to his surprise action hit Olympus Has Fallen.

This won't be the first time that he has had to wear a wetsuit onscreen; he wore one in his role as real-life surfer Frosty Hesson in 2012's Chasing Mavericks.

Butler is repped by CAA and Alan Siegel Entertainment.

Gerry, Gerry, Gerry... No. Just ... no. What happened to "I don't do 'remakes' or 'sequels'"? Moreover, why remake something that was crap to start with? Another day, another request for Alan to "go away" and for someone new to take over management of the Gerry Juice.

I thought it was the job of his agent to bring him the projects, not Alan. I figured Alan's job was just managing the production company/business side of things. I would think it would take many people to handle The Butler and his interests but he would get the final say so in whatever he came across.

I don't remember seeing the original Point Break although it sounds vaguely familiar. Will have to check it out. Not crazy about the idea of Gerry being involved in a project that has "extreme sports" and surfing big waves in it again but we all know how he loves the water and surfing and he'll probably grow his hair back out again! So what could go wrong, right?

I am excited about "Gods of Egypt"! Life along the Nile with pyramids, desert, pharaohs, queens, gods and chariots!

:chuck:

"Will there be camels involved?"

Looks like he's going to be a busy boy this year! Keeps him out of trouble! :whome2:

How many movies have we heard about with Gerry attached only to have them disappear overtime. I never take any movie deal seriously until he starts making the movie. Let's be honest, any good scripts out there goes right to the old and established actors like Tom Hanks, George Clooney and Tom Cruise. You know the ones I mean. They are the in-crowd in Hollywood. They get the best movies. Writing talent is limited in Hollywood so there are few new movie scripts which is why you hear so much about remakes. Hollywood is not what is used to be. Movies are not what they used to be.

I'm kinda with you, Kathy. It's all just talk at this point. Let's see how many projects he was attached to that disappeared, like The Bricklayer, Motor City, Hunter Killer, Manhunt (?), Brilliant (?), The Garden of Last Days. Remember that project about Pinkerton, a made for TV series? That sounded like a really good one! That one would have a very strong appeal over here in the USA. I was really disappointed when Motor City fell through. That was the one that had Gary Oldman attached and I would have loved to see Gerry work with him. I still hold out hope for Thunder Run, The Raven, Dynamo and even the elusive Burns and I do think Gods of Egypt will happen and doing films like the remake of Point Break may not sound like a good idea to some at the time, he has to work to make the money it takes to make those films that are the dream projects too. I heard that he's never seen a script to London is Falling yet so you never know what the heck is going on. There's probably nothing more frustrating to any actor then to turn down work to do other things then have those things fall through! Maybe best thing to do is accept them all and then pick and choose when it gets down to nut cutting time. You can always say you're in before you sign on the dotted line can't you? I'm just anxious to see him up there on the big screen again.

A little depressing seeing that list of movies Gerry was attached to and they are not being made. How about the one that Gerry was supposed to do right after OHF and he even had to rush his part to make the date the movie was to start and it was cancelled two weeks before filming. I know there was a lawsuit connected to that because Gerry wasn't paid as per contract. That was the end of his filming for over a year. You wonder what was going on behind the scenes. I also wonder why Gerry hasn't worked since then. I think we all are frustrated that movies come up and still Gerry is not filming.

It was Motor City that fell through. Gerry had to speed up completing OHF so he could start filming on it and he had already passed up some other offers to film Motor City too. I'd say that was worth a law suit.

I have never watched the movie Point Break but I am going to rent it from Netflix. I am not sure if it is a good idea for Gerry to do a remake of the movie BUT if he does I stand behind him because that is what a TRUE fan will do not matter what.

If he does end up doing the remake of Point Break I am hoping that he will use a stunt double instead of him doing his own stunts.
