HOW TO: Clear Cookies and Cache

Recommended Posts

If you have problems with viewing the Forum, or with how it functions, after an update has been applied, here are a couple of 'fixes".

They ARE easy to do! ;)

First, clear your cache for GALS in your Browser Cache. If that doesn't resolve the issue, clear the cookies for GALS.

Restart your computer after this is done, just to ensure it's 'taken'. Then reopen GALS and the issue should be resolved. You will need to log back into GALS after you remove the cookies.

What is browser cache?
Browser cache (also known as Temporary Internet files) stores the content of all the web pages that you have visited (including pictures, animation, movies, other downloads, etc) during a session. This speeds up the displaying of pages you frequently visit as a web browser can open them from your hard disk instead of downloading them from the web.
Storing cache files can make browsing the web faster because it usually takes your computer less time to display a web page when it can open page's elements or even the entire page from your local Temporary Internet Files folder. However, it can threaten your privacy because everyone who has access to your computer can see some personal information - by simply opening the cache file/folder (Temporary Internet Files), anyone can see what videos you've watched, what pictures you've seen, where you've been online and more. To safeguard your information, you should clear cache regularly.

*What is a computer "cookie"?

A computer “cookie” is more formally known as an HTTP cookie, a web cookie, an Internet cookie, or a browser cookie. The name is a shorter version of “magic cookie,” which is a term for a packet of data that a computer receives, then sends back without changing or altering it. No matter what it’s called, a computer cookie consists of information. When you visit a website, the website sends the cookie to your computer. Your computer stores it in a file located inside your web browser.  (To help you find it, this file is often called “Cookies.”)

  • You can clear just the cookies for GALS sites instead of all sites if you wish.
  • You will have to re-enter your passwords for sites that you have 'remember me' options on (like GALS log-in, Photobucket, etc.)

Again, this should help resolve any issues.
