I may not post often, but I do check this thread often. Bennett is always in my prayers and I am glad to hear he seems to be doing well.

CONGRATULATIONS BENNETT!!!!

Oncology and MRI update - We just got back with another clean MRI result. There were no signs of the tumor but there is some scar tissue still there that the doctor's are watching very closely. I was praying that his doctor's appointments would start to diminish but they are not going to.

The area in which the tumor was located is filled with brain fluid and the area of fluid has gotten smaller which is a good thing. I just didn't realize or didn't hear them that it would take so long before he is truly out of the woods and considered cured. He will have an MRI every 3 months for the next year. Every 6 months for 2 years after that and then they will consider the regrow factor not an issue anymore. He will not be released from the pediatric oncology department until he is 21 years old and will then be turned over to the adult department where he will still have to have an MRI once a year for the rest of his life.

I guess I was just assuming this would be like any cancer and that after 18 months of no show he would be considered cured. I always knew that I would feel concerned or possibly over react every time he had a headache or started to sleep a lot, but that's just being a mother right? He had started sleeping a lot again about 3 weeks ago and I was starting to freak out again, but the oncologist told me to expect another growth spurt out of him in the next month - Great - just bought all new school clothes so they won't fit again in another month.

I just have to learn to chill out a little more and go with the flow - Just like Bennett does every day . I have the greatest teacher in strength and faith and forget to watch how Bennett handles everything and should pay attention to how my hero handles this tough time in his life. I never expected that I would learn so much from my own child, but when you have SPARTAN strength and mentality it shows through like a ray of sunshine every day.

I do have to share his wit with you. We had a young resident that examined him today and she is in her 2nd year of residency. She is asking all of the normal questions and doing her normal checkup and she is very petite and of course cute and you could see that she caught Bennett's eye. She asked him if he was having any fevers or chills and he said no, then she asked are you ever the coldest or hottest person in the room and he very quickly answered, "I am always the hottest one in the room." My sister and I both started laughing and the young doctor just said with a very pleasing little grin, with an attitude like that I bet you are and I bet you don't have any self confidence issues either. What am I going to do with this child.

Thank you again for all of your continued prayers and thoughts for my boy.

I Love you GALS,

Hugs,

Dawn

Dawn,

I am sitting her laughing at that comment by Bennett about being the "hottest" person in the room! Way to go Bennett!!!

I am glad to hear that Bennett recieved another clear MRI and I will pray that he continues to do so. I understand your concern about the continued MRI's but it is a good thing to keep on eye on things. My daughter has to get MRI's once a year because of her cyst and while I do not look forward to them, I know that if anything changes it will be seen sooner than later.

Congrats to Bennett for getting his license! I know I can't tell you not to be stressed because I know when my daughter gets her license I am going to be a basket case!

Thank you for the updates and please know I am keeping Bennett in my prayers for his continued good health. :highfive:

:hugs:

Dear Dawn,

With no exaggeration, I find your year's journey an extraordinary one. I say this, not because I can empathise or relate as I have no experience of this with my own family, but because of the love that shines through when you speak of Bennett.

However, I can say unreservedly that the character traits you use to describe Bennett should also be used to portray you. Strength, faith, mental fortitude, hope and generosity make you the mother and person that you are and the son and young man that Bennett is.

I realise your membership at Gals was due to a common passion you and Bennett both have for action movies but I also know you have been most grateful for some of the kinds words, prayers and friendships shown to you by others throughout the past twelve months.

I feel blessed by knowing you just a little.

Take care of you while you take care of Bennett,

N

Oh Dawn, I wish I could give you and Bennett a truly big hug in person...but I can't so this will have to do:

Nay described you so well. I know deep down in your heart you wanted this to be over...something that could be put behind you and Bennett ...never to return (I know that is what I wanted) ... but God has other plans for Bennett...and I know that they are for his good and God's glory. We have to remember Whose son Bennett really is and that will help you (and me) to chill like Bennett...lol.

Oh Lord, once again I thank You for this young man who is such a faithful witness for You and for his beloved mother who has nurtured and raised him to be this remarkable man after Your own heart. Be with them and bless them and protect them all the days of their lives. Father, you know that we would have liked to have had the doctor say the cancer is gone and that it will never return but for some reason You want us to remember that all our days are numbered and that only You know the number of our days. But I ask Lord that while Bennett will have to be periodically checked for the rest of his life that You would keep him cancer free. Give comfort to Dawn now and always Lord with the peace of knowing that while Bennett is her son and loved so much that he is also Yours and that you love him even more. Strengthen her with the sure knowledge that his love for You assures him a life full of deep joy no matter the circumstances he faces and an eternal life that we can't even comprehend. And most especially Lord, keep them both so close to Your heart. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen.

Dawn, you know I'm here if you need me.

Love to you and Bennett.

Sue

Trip to the Radiology Oncology department today at our new Cancer Center in Grand Rapids went very well. His doctor thought he looked great, still a little too skinny but at least with a full head of hair again. All the new hair on his head that came in after radiation is very curly and he is not very happy about that. His doctor said she really didn't know if it would go back to normal or not. He still has a little spot on the back of his head where he received a pretty serious radiation burn that is very thin but he has let it grow long enough that you really would never now.

School started today and again I have been surprised by how much he has grown mentally. I was disapointed in the fact that he chose not to play soccer but seeing how tired he was when he got home from school made me realise that physically he wasn't ready to play. As usual he would never have shared that information with me as he would not have wanted me to worry needelessly. I have to realise that this young man does know his own physical capabilities and just sit back and watch with awe and amazement.

Off to work I go and I will post his school picture as soon as I have it.

Thank you again all for your continued prayers and lovely notes for my greatest joy in life.

Hugs, Lots of Love and prayers to you all,

Dawn

Well as promised - here is the notorious School Picture.

I really think the boy needs a hair cut - but my heart tells me to shut up - especially after he has had to shave it all of at least 6 times in the last year and a half.

He does look very handsome though - even if I do say so myself. HAHAHAHA

I'm not toooo proud.

Hugs to you all.
